160 students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering got the chance to meet representatives from major companies - such as Barclays and Bosch - at two 'Meet the Employers' events, held on campus in November.

The format for both events was speed networking, during which the students each had ten minutes with a company, before moving on to the next.

Prior to this, the students were given networking skills training to equip them for this.

The first 'Meet the Employers' event was focused on Computing Placements, aimed at Year 2 Computing students looking for a sandwich placement.

Eleven companies attended: Adepteo, Appriss Retail, Bosch, Griffiths Waite, Kaboodle, Matalan, TopCashback, TouchSoft, UD Group, UKFast and Web Applications UK.

One of the employers who attended the event said: “The event was a good opportunity to promote our business as an attractive option for students. The smaller groups worked well, and were less intimidating for students than a 1-on-1 set-up.”

The second event was aimed at students in the Department of Engineering. Companies were offering sandwich placements, summer placements, part time work and graduate roles

18 organisations attended: Barclays, Bosch, Cartwright Group, Cavendish Nuclear, DriveWorks, EASL, Fichtner, Futureserv, Greater Manchester Police, KPMG, NDC, Neville Johnson, NMCN, Pick Everard, the Royal Navy, TOPdesk, Manchester Metropolitan teacher training and WPO.

An employer from this event commented: “We enjoyed the event, it was well organised and we felt very welcome upon arrival. The round table idea was great, it made for some good conversations.”

At the end of each event, there was the opportunity for students to follow up with one-to-one networking with employers.

The events were organised and supported by the Placements team, with support from academics and the Faculty Careers and Employability team.
