Dr Faisal received his PhD (2010) in Exercise and Cardiorespiratory Physiology from the University of Waterloo, Canada. His PhD training was conducted at the Cardiovascular Dynamics Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Richard Hughson and his PhD dissertation was examined by Professor Brian Whipp. Following his PhD training, Dr. Faisal completed a postdoctoral fellowship (2012-2016) in clinical exercise physiology in the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University under the mentorship of Professor Denis O’Donnell. Dr Faisal has awarded the prestige European Respiratory Society Fellowship (2017-2018) in the Muscle Lab at Imperial College London, UK under the mentorship of Professor Michael Polkey and Dr Nicholas Hopkinson. Dr Faisal began his academic appointment at Manchester Metropolitan University as a Senior Lecturer of Sport and Exercise Physiology in 2019.
Dr Faisal has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2018. He leads the Cardiopulmonary Physiology Units at undergraduate and masters.
Dr Faisal has an integrative exercise physiology research program aims to better understand the physiological factors (cardiovascular, respiratory and skeletal muscle) that limit exercise tolerance in health, sport and disease. Dr Faisal is a full member of the Research Centre for Musculoskeletal Science & Sports Medicine which has several novel measurement techniques to simultaneously assess the muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuro-physiological responses to exercise. PhD students interested in pursuing graduate training are encouraged to contact Dr Faisal directly.
