Here at MMU Sport we have something for everyone who wants to get active at university - whether you want to play sport for fun, compete against other teams or represent Manchester Met in our blue and orange colours.

Aikido

REPRESENT

Aikido Alive Manchester/Iwama Aikido MMU is a new Aikido Club in Manchester affiliated with the long-established Aikido Alive London headed by Sensei Bjorn Saw. Training will be in the Iwama tradition as taught by Morihiro Saito Sensei. The club is being initiated by members of Aikido Alive London with staff and students from MMU as a NON-Profit club.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba. Individuals gain different things from practice. Some enjoy the martial, physical and technical aspects of one of the most sophisticated martial arts ever developed, while others engage more with aspects of concentration and moving meditation. It is a personal journey with many possibilities.

 

Coaches and support staff:
Members receive a three hour coached session per week.

 

Training facilities and times:
Training takes place in the Sugden Sports Centre.

Mondays: 20:30 – 22:30
Wednesdays: 20:30 – 22:30

 

American Football

REPRESENT

The Eagles, Manchester Met’s American Football Team compete in a BUCS League and play against six other universities on Sunday afternoons between November and March.

Last year they recorded their best regular season record, which they’re looking to build on in the coming year.

 

BUCS level:
1st team – Northern 2A.

 

Coaches and support staff:

This summer the club has recruited a new high profile head coach, Rick Hurst, along with 10-12 positional coaches who will spend their time teaching you the skills to develop as a player.

Training takes place at Platt Lane Sports Complex.
Tuesdays 20:00 – 22:00
Sundays 13:00 – 15:00

Archery

PLAY FOR FUN

If you don’t fancy the commitment of joining a team, then come along to our Active Extra Archery course where you can learn from scratch or perfect your existing skills.

A coach leads the sessions, so it doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced archer or have never played before, Active Extra is for everyone and all abilities. 

When:

The 4-week course starts on Sunday 21st October and runs until Sunday 11th November

15:30 and 18:30.

Athletics

REPRESENT

The Manchester Met Athletics Club is a Highlighted Sport.  This provides an integrated pathway into local clubs such as Trafford Athletics Club and Sale Athletics Club. We also have athletes working with British Athletics. The athletics club members train and compete in various events, from track and road running, cross-country, field events and throws.

BUS Level:

The Athletics team compete in numerous events such as the BUCS Championships, Manchester Cross Country league, inter-university relays and a whole host of other competitions and meets.

Coaches and support staff:

Jamaican record holder Steve Green coaches the Athletics Team, specialising in middle/long distance track, road and cross country training.

A Commonwealth Games 1500m finalist, Steve has a vast amount of coaching experience including working as Athletics Development Officer for Guernsey Athletic Club and Trafford AC.

Training facilities and times:

All teams train at various weekly locations with the base being at Platt Lane Sports complex.

Mondays 17:45: Meet at Brooks Buiding with training on grass playing field at Alexandra Park, Salford Quays or Etihad Stadium

Tuesdays 16:30 - 18:00: Gym/circuit training

Thursdays 17:00 - 18:00: Gym/circuit training

REPRESENT

Badminton is the world’s fastest racket sport with shots reaching speeds of almost 500 km/h! Split second reactions combined with skill and agility make it one of the most participated sports ever.

Manchester Met’s badminton club consist of two men’s and one women’s team who play in their respected BUCS leagues and even represent the university at the BUCS nationals held in Sheffield in February.  They welcome new members of all abilities.

All teams are coached by Paul Stewart, who brings a wealth of experience and is well established in the badminton world.

Manchester Met Basketball is a Spotlight Sport.  This provides an integrated pathway with the area’s top basketball clubs in the Manchester Giants (BBL), Manchester Magic (NBL 1) and Lancashire Spinners (NBL 1).

Men’s 2nd team – Northern 2a

Men’s 3rd team – Northern 3a

Coaches and support staff:

Callum Jones coaches the men’s 1st team, having over 10 years of experience coaching at AASE academies and University level.

Callum also captains the Manchester Giants BBL team, as part of an eight-year professional career.

Basketball scholar Rihanne Bailey coaches the women’s team alongside studying at Manchester Met and playing for Manchester Mystics.

Boxing

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Boxing is a relatively new but growing club who welcome new members of all abilities – regardless of whether you’ve never worn a boxing glove or are an experienced boxer.

 

BUCS level:

Members compete as individuals in the annual BUCS competition.

The club trains in the Union.

Canoe

REPRESENT

Everyone is welcome at Manchester Met’s Canoe Club.  They practice every Wednesday in the pool playing games and developing paddling and have a number of exciting river and lake trips coming up which are great for both beginners and experts.

Cheerleading

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Cheerleading was created in January 2012 and were the National Champions in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and won Sports Club of the Year 2015/2016.

They regularly perform for Manchester Met sports teams at games and charity events and have teams to suit all levels, whatever your experience.

For those who want to play cricket all year round, Manchester Met Cricket Club offer the opportunity play both competitively or leisurely, train and play indoor and outdoor.

They are a highly social club that is keen to help improve players of all standards. They compete competitively in both the indoor and outdoor BUCS competitions.

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Dance welcomes students of all genders, abilities and ages to join in weekly classes; street, jazz and contemporary.

Dance has three teams that compete all over the country but the club is also about having fun and making friends.

Membership includes all three weekly classes every Wednesday and extra training for those who successfully make the teams.

Equestrian Club

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Equestrian club has members of all levels of riding experience from beginners to advanced and welcome new members regardless of whether you are an experienced rider or have never even sat in a saddle before.

REPRESENT

The Equestrian Team have two teams and compete in both the regional trophy and championship in BUCS as a team and in individual events.

REPRESENT

Club overview:

Whether you want to fence for fun, fitness or competition, Manchester Met Fencing welcome all skill levels.

They currently run a Sabre programme but also welcome Foil and Epee fencers.  Coaching sessions are friendly and fun, aimed at improving skills and confidence.

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Men’s Football is a student led club with four teams competing in the BUCS league, all of whom are pushing for promotion due to the fantastic facilities at Platt Lane and a high standard of coaching provision. 

Regardless of whether you are successful in trials, MMU Sport offer a wider programme of football including coach education, campus leagues and active campus sessions.

Gareth brings over 12 years’ experience to the role, with eight years in premier league and football league academies.  Paul has extensive experience in grassroots and schools coaching and provides external coaching opportunities for students.

Manchester Met Futsal has made massive improvements over the past three years and will be pushing for promotion in the next season.

The upcoming season will see the club face top Futsal University teams and would welcome members who will help them achieve their ambition to win the league for the third time.

Gaelic Football

REPRESENT

Club overview:

Manchester Met Ladies Gaelic began as an established team in 2015 and over the past number of year have entered into the British Universities GAA League and Championship, improving with each year.

This year they hope to compete once again in February’s championship and welcome all females – regardless of nationality or experience.

The team train at Platt Fields Park.

Golf

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Golf club allows members who have a love for golf the chance to play with fellow students, whether that be for the team or just for fun.

They run interclub competitions throughout the year and will be entering two teams into the BUCS leagues, so there will be lots of opportunities to represent Manchester Met whilst playing some of the top courses in the North, including their home matches at Northenden Golf Club.

Jiu Jitsu

REPRESENT

Jiu Jitsu is a practical self-defence martial art that uses locks, strikes, throws and holds to immobilize your opponent. The club’s style originates from unarmed combat techniques used by the Samurai so they use traditional techniques and training weapons like wooden swords, with a modern day element such as learning to defend from plastic bottles and rubber knives.

They learn to use their opponents’ strength against them so Jiu Jitsu can work for men and women of all shapes and sides.

 

BUCS level:

The team take part as individuals in the annual BUCS competition in Sheffield.

 

Coaches and support staff:

Members receive three hours of coaching per week by Ian de Cordvo.

The club trains at the Sugden Sports centre.

Korfball

Lacrosse

REPRESENT

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and Manchester Met Lacrosse have both a men’s and a women’s team competing in the BUCS league.  

The club had an exciting season last year, with both teams competing well and the men winning both the league and the cup. They welcome new members who will help them grow the team and achieve further success.

Women’s – Northern 1a

 

Coaches and support staff:

The men’s team receive coaching from Ryan Sweetman who also represents England and Brooklands Lacrosse.

Both teams train in the Dome at Platt Lane Sports Complex.

We currently have three Lacrosse Scholars.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

REPRESENT

Manchester Met’s MMA club train every week and take part in external competitions. They welcome new members regardless of experience or ability.

Mountaineering

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Mountaineering take every opportunity to get outside climbing, hiking, and exploring. The club is open to all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced and regular climbers.

The club climb indoors every Monday and Wednesday at our local climbing centres. They also offer a range of exciting annual trips which are all subsidised for members.  

 

BUCS level:

The club takes part in the annual BUCS Nationals competition in Sheffield.

 

Coaches and support staff:

The club receives weekly training sessions with qualified instructors.

Training takes place at either Rock Over Climbing or Manchester Climbing Centre.

Netball

COMPETE

Compete against friends, flatmates and course mates in our Netball Campus League.  Play weekly fixtures with qualified umpires and compete against other university teams at Manchester Met.  

Our Campus Leagues are a great way to play the sport you love in a social but competitive environment, with trophies and prizes at the end of the year for the winning team.

REPRESENT

Represent Manchester Metropolitan and join Netball.

Manchester Met Netball is a Spotlight Sport, with six teams playing in the BUCS league. A highly experienced new coaching team, alongside a brand new double show-court facility at Platt Lane, shows the level of investment we have behind our netballers.

The Netball development officer and head coach of Manchester Met and Tameside Netball Club, Paul Harper, offers a wealth of experience having won 5 NPL titles with 7 Manchester Thunder and seeing many of his athletes reach the highest level of Netball.

Michelle Gilkes is our 2nd team coach and is involved with Manchester Thunder Netball Club.

Pool & Snooker

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Pool and Snooker welcome all new players, whether you’re a pool veteran or have never picked up a cue.

The tables the club uses at Riley’s Sports bar are of tournament quality and don’t worry if you don’t own a pool or snooker cue as there’s plenty for everyone.

All members can also obtain a Riley’s membership, which entitles you to discounted rates on drinks and tables throughout the year.

 

BUCS level:

The club takes part in tournaments across the country, with almost all members able to participate in at least one of these tournaments.

Training takes place at Rileys Sports Bar in Chorlton.

REPRESENT

Rounder’s is a fun and social sport to play. Both men and women are welcome to join the club, whether you’re a pro player or have never even picked up a bat.

The club takes part in friendly tournaments throughout the year and trains weekly to help you improve and develop your skills.

Manchester Met Rugby League club is one of our Highlight Sports. The team has been developing over the past three years and the recent partnership with Toronto Wolfpack,  who now use Manchester Met’s Platt Lane facility as their UK training base, is likely to enable the team to develop even further.

Chris O’Connor leads the coaching, whilst also working as the Performance Analyst to the Toronto Wolfpack. Chris has years of experience of playing and coaching both codes of rugby, alongside many years of working within the Fire Service.

Partners, links and pathways:

Toronto Wolfpack - the club will use Platt Lane Sports Complex in Fallowfield, south Manchester, as their full-time base between home games in Toronto.

Players and backroom staff will have access to not only the 3G pitch but also the strength and conditioning suite, physio room, video analysis equipment and lounge.

Manchester Rangers - Ongoing discussions with Manchester Rangers who wish to become a Championship 1 team (semi-pro).

Rob also currently coaches the Hungarian National 7s Team, North of England’s leading elite invitational 7s team, Red Panda. 

Steph Veal coaches the women’s teams alongside coaching Waterloo Ladies Football Rugby club as well as working for Manchester Rugby development group.

Snow Sports

PLAY FOR FUN

If you don’t fancy the commitment of joining a team, then don’t worry as you can still enjoy snow sports through Active Extra.

This term we are offering courses in both Snowboarding and Skiing.   A coach leads the sessions, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve got lots of experience or are completely new to snow sports.  Active Extra is for everyone and all abilities. 

When:

Active Extra Skiing and Snowboarding both begin on Tuesday 6th November 2018 and runs until Tuesday 20th November 2018. The sessions take place between 19:00 and 21:00.

Where:

Our courses take place at Chill Factore, Trafford Way, Trafford Quays Leisure Village, Manchester M41 7JA.

Whether you are a keen competitor, or just fancy learning to ski or board, then Manchester Met Snow sports has you covered.

The club holds trips to the Alps over Christmas and Easter which are always extremely popular and this year we will be taking 200+ students out to Les Duex Alps for RISE Festival.

The club takes part in numerous competitions throughout the year for both freestyle and racing.


Training facilities and times:

The club organises trips to the indoor snow dome at Chill Factore every 2/3 weeks where members can practice freestyle and racing.

REPRESENT

Manchester Met Surf are very social club who organise surf trips all over the country as well as abroad.

The club don’t have weekly training sessions but the more experienced members will help you improve your skills and progress quickly and safely.

REPRESENT

Club overview:

Manchester Met Swimming is a Spotlight Sport, which provides an integrated pathway alongside the City of Manchester Swim team (CoMAST). This pathway is the first Swim England Performance Centre and is supported by British Swimming and British Para-Swimming.

 

BUCS level:

The swim club competes in all BUCS competitions as well as hosting various external galas.

 

Coaches and support staff:

Mark Rose is the Head Coach of CoMAST, having coached in numerous Paralympic games and international meets.

Following his success at the Rio Paralympic Games 2016, Mark received the Para Coaching Award of Excellence. 

Megan Jones coaches the swim team alongside coaching with CoMAST.

 

Training facilities and times:

The club can access up to 28 hours of training in conjunction with the CoMAST swim teams at Manchester Aquatics Centre.

 

Partners, links and pathways:

CoMAST – elite level swimmers are invited to train with CoMAST whilst attending Manchester Met (up to 20 hours of training available a week).  CoMAST use the university academic departments for additional sport science support such as nutrition workshops, physio and strength and conditioning.

Swim England - Swim England has agreed that the CoMAST / Manchester Met partnership is to become the first Swim England Performance Centre.


British Para-Swimming - British Para Swimming have already agreed in principle to our Memorandum of Understanding and we are already working collaboratively through academic input, student athletes at the university, flexible study arrangements, cooperation in CPD work for staff and more.


British Swimming - Aligned with our ambitions of becoming a ‘go to’ university for elite athletes who want to commit to a dual career option, we have been working with British Swimming to ensure that this fits both our programmes.

Taekwondo

REPRESENT

The Taekwondo team is open to all styles of Taekwondo, having both a practical self-defence side and a sporting side. The club has many high level athletes who also represent their country in the University Student National Squad as well as recreational participants who concentrate more on the non-competitive side of Taekwondo. The squad currently has 24 National Champions, 2 European Champions and 3 World Champions in its competition and league squad.

 

Coaches and support staff:

The club receive coaching from veteran member and current Student Sport Officer Ross Sharman who is an international intructor and examiner, 4th Degree Black Belt.

Manchester Met men’s Water Polo is a Spotlight Sport, and women's Water Polo highlight sport. This provides an integral pathway with the country’s top water polo club in the City of Manchester (NL 1st Division), Manchester Sharks (Northern League) and England Water Polo.

Coaches and support staff:

London 2012 Olympian, Chloe Wilcox, is the Water Polo coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. Having played professionally in Spain and Australia, Chloe is a level 2 coach with over 10 years of experience, having coached at beginner level through to junior and senior international events.

All teams train in either the Manchester Aquatics Centre or the East Manchester Leisure Centre.
