Getting started:

Want to get into running but don't know where to start? There's plenty of time to go from couch to 10k and give you extra brownie points as you tuck into Christmas Dinner. Check out the free interactive Great Run training guides. You simply create a login, pick the event you want to train for and the level you're at, and get a customised training plan. Plans are for run / walkers, starters, improvers and challengers!

If the idea of even running one minute is a challenge for you, fear not. We've found some great tried and tested running plans that you can start in the new year and give yourself plenty of time to build into a walk / run for the Great Manchester 10k.

Run with us!

Want some friendly faces to run with? MMU Sport's free jogging club meets every Thursday at 4.45pm at All Saints Park, come rain or shine. All levels are catered for. Email with any questions.

We're also taking out beginners Tuesday at 12:30. Meet outside Bell House, opposite All Saints Park and email with any questions.

You can also run with the Manchester Front Runners, Manchester's LGBT running group, with a run from outside the Sugden Centre, also on Thursdays at 7pm.

If you want to find a run club close to home, then check out Run Together, who have run leaders taking beginners and more advanced runners out across the country! And there's also parkrun, a free timed 5km event every week, where you can race yourself and see how you're improving.

The route:

The start line is on Portland Street near the junction with Oxford Street. The finish line is on Deansgate. The route takes in the views of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, the award-winning Imperial War Museum and The Lowry. You will also pass the famous cobbles of Coronation Street’s new set. Perhaps the most significant landmark will be Beetham Tower, the 47-storey skyscraper which almost marks the finish line for you!

The atmosphere:

There will be a great Bands on the Run programme this year, with 10 music zones, DJs, live bands and Inspiral Carpets’ legend Clint Boon’s Boon Army stage at the halfway point to lift you for the second leg. Two Key 103 Wall of Sound sections will keep you going at 6k and after 9k, featuring Key 103’s specially chosen playlist to drive you along. There are official charity cheering points on the course from Cancer Research UK, We are MacMillan, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and The Christie, so give them a wave as they cheer you on!
