Biography

Mark is a Reader in education at Manchester Metropolitan University, which he joined in September 2013, having previously taught at the University of Chester. He has more than 20 years’ management experience in both public and private sectors and studied at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool before gaining his PhD in cognitive psychology at the University of Chester.

He has gained national recognition, including Chief External Examiner for the University of Westminster, BAM Research Methods SIG Steering Committee, and Association for Business Psychology North-West committee. This experience is supplemented by roles with substantial international impact, such as membership of the editorial board of Innovations in Education and Teaching International journal, and accreditation panel of Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) for universities in the Netherlands and Turkiye.

Mark is a Principal Fellow of the HEA and a Fellow of the CMI and IoL and is a Certified Business Psychologist and a Certified Management and Business Educator.  He is currently the PGT lead for the Department of Strategy, Enterprise and Sustainability, and is faculty lead for a range of projects including international case competitions and Developing Education Excellence.  His research interests are primarily centred around education and the psychology of decision-making.

Research outputs

Mark’s research interests are primarily centred around decision-making, and in particular, in the area of cognitive heuristics. Topics of interest include identification of the underlying processes of heuristic decision-making; the role of System 1 and System 2; the relationship between heuristics and personality type; the relationship between heuristics and work environment; and exploring possible links between Jung’s collective unconscious and heuristics.
