Biography

Paul is Professor of Sustainability and Research Director for the Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research explores the role of innovation in systems of sustainable consumption and production. Recently his work has focused on the economic, environmental and social impacts of the circular economy, especially with respect to the informal economy and biodiversity. He is currently leading a British Academy funded project on ‘Understanding processes of formalisation and circularity in the Amazon rainforest’. The project will report in December 2023. 

Paul’s research has been supported by a diverse set of funders from the UK and internationally, from both research and innovation funders including US National Science Foundation, Innovate UK, Health Innovation Manchester, Innovation Fund Denmark, ESRC, and EPSRC. Grants total over £1.5m. 

In August 2023 Paul was appointed Research Director for the Faculty of Business and Law. As Faculty Research Director, Paul is responsible for setting the long-term strategic vision and leading and embedding research throughout the Faculty of Business and Law. 

Beyond MMU, Paul co-leads the Future Earth Knowledge Action Network on Systems of Sustainable Consumption and Production Circular Economy Working Group  and sits on the Management Team of the Future Earth Knowledge Action Network on Systems of Sustainable Consumption and Production

He is an Editorial Board Member of Springer’s Circular Economy and Sustainability and OAE’s Carbon Footprint journal, a member of the British Academy of Management Peer Review College and UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships Peer Review College, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Manchester Institute of Innovation Research, The University of Manchester.   

He is an alumnus of the International Teachers Programme, which he completed in 2011 at Kellogg Management School, Northwestern University, and of the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE) Entrepreneurial Leaders Programme in 2022. 

Before re-joining MMU, Paul was Professor of Sustainability and Innovation at Keele University, where he was Keele Business School Research Director and Deputy Director of Keele’s Institute for Sustainable Futures (2020-2022). Previously he was Reader at MMU (2018-2020), Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at The University of Manchester (2003-2018) and Research Fellow and Associate at UMIST (1999-2003). He was awarded a PhD by the University of Manchester in 2005. 

Interests and expertise

Paul’s research explores the role of innovation in systems of sustainable consumption and production. Much of Paul’s past work has looked at eco-innovation in the food and built environment sectors. Recently his work has focused on the economic, environmental and social impacts of the circular economy, especially with respect to the informal economy and biodiversity. His research has been funded by external grants totalling over £1.5m, including, most recently, funding in 2021 from the British Academy to explore regenerative and circular practices in the Amazon region, and in 2020 from the US National Science Foundation to establish a series of working groups exploring how COVID19 can contribute to sustainability transitions.

Projects

Paul is currently leading a British Academy funded project to understand processes of formalisation and circularity in the Amazon rainforest (BA SRG-211160). See below for a brief summary of the project. The project will report by December 2023.

Addressing major environmental challenges requires interventions that pay attention to the socio-economic context in which local communities live and work. This is especially relevant for the Amazon rainforest, one of the most biodiverse locations on the planet, where the social and economic conditions are precarious for many informal communities. Circular principles - reducing waste and resource use, regenerating natural systems - offer an alternative, more sustainable, way forward. The aim of this project is to explore how circular land-use practices can be adopted more systematically by informal actors in the Amazon rainforest. We focus on what new types of organisations and distributed forms of collaboration can facilitate circular practices, and how these organisational innovations can support sustainable processes of formalisation. We identify challenges to overcome and opportunities for reciprocal learning. The outputs of the project will make scientific and practical contributions, progressing the pathway to impact.

Teaching

Paul’s teaching approach is based on an underlying enquiry-based learning pedagogy and interactive ‘lecture’ sessions, engaging students in deeper learning. His interest in interactive teaching began in 2006 following involvement with the Centre for Excellence in Enquiry Based Learning (CEEBL) at The University of Manchester. He participated in the International Teachers Programme (ITP) in 2011 at Northwestern University where the focus was on the learning power of interactive teaching. His experiences at CEEBL and ITP stimulated innovation in his own teaching and Paul built on this learning to stimulate wider curriculum reform and development through involvement in the Alliance Manchester Business School Teaching Academy (2011-2016), The University of Manchester Faculty of Humanities Peer Review College (2014-2018) and, more recently, at Keele Business School by initiating a Cluster of Excellence on Innovation in Teaching (2021).

Supervision

On a theme of sustainable innovation systems, I have supervised six PhD researchers to completion; three more are currently progressing.  

PhD topics included: Circular economy and non-financial reporting; Climate change adaptation/mitigation strategies of MNE subsidiaries; Policy support for responsible enterprises; Corporate financial and sustainability performance; Informal innovation for sustainable development; Carbon capture and storage innovation systems; Trade associations and institutional eco-innovation; Sustainable business models; and Sustainability meta-labelling

I have examined five PhDs.

I am always interested in supervising PhD researchers on topics related to innovation and systems of sustainable consumption and production, and, in particular, on the circular economy. 

Research outputs

Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his research, he has published in leading management journals such as Research Policy, R&D Management and Ecological Economics, and other high impact journals such as Resources, Conservation and Recycling, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Industrial Ecology.
