PGCE Secondary applicants can choose between a University-led or School-led route.

Both routes have the same entry requirements, lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and include 60 Masters level credits.

School Direct

School Direct trainees are attached to a specified school within an alliance of schools during their PGCE year. Manchester Metropolitan University works in partnership with 18 school alliances across the North West region.

Candidates are normally interviewed by the school they will be attached to. Trainees undertake two contrasting placements with different age groups and a Special Educational Needs (SEN) placement within the alliance, spending four weeks in taught sessions at University.

All PGCE applications should be made through UCAS Teacher Training.

Entry Requirements

PGCE Primary School Direct:

  • degree classification of 2:2 or above
  • at least 3 GCSE A-C grades to include English Language, Mathematics and Science; B or equivalent grades desirable for English Language, Mathematics and Science 

PGCE Secondary School Direct:

  • degree classification of 2:2 or above
  • GCSE in Mathematics and English Language Grade C or equivalent 

Other Requirements

All candidates applying for PGCE Primary or Secondary School Direct for September entry will need to sit pre-entry skills tests in Numeracy and Literacy. No unconditional offer will be made until both tests have been passed. If you are offered a place conditional on passing these tests, they should be completed before August of your entry year to satisfy this aspect of the condition. For late applications, priority will be given to those who have already passed the tests.

School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)

Networks of schools that have been approved to run school-centred courses are known as SCITTs. They provide practical teacher training, delivered by experienced, practising teachers based in their own school or a school in their network. ‘SCITT’ is also a type of school-led course, similar to the non-salaried School Direct option.

The Faculty of Education is currently working with four SCITTs:

Associate Teachers enrolled onto the programme gain their QTS via the SCITT Post Graduate Certificate in Education (SCITT) M level as part of an on-going Manchester Met Professional Development model. The award is situated within our Professional Development Programmes and is seen as the first stage of a Master's level programme. We are committed to the professional development of teachers and as such, Associate Teachers are encouraged to continue onward post-PGCE to complete the full Masters' programme.
