We celebrate diversity and value different backgrounds, identities and experiences within our vibrant community.

We promote a culture of acceptance, without exception, where:

  • diverse abilities and backgrounds are recognised and treated with respect
  • we promote strong relationships between members of our community
  • students from every background have equal opportunities to benefit from higher education
  • students and staff from every background have equal opportunities to reach their potential

Find out more in our Equality and Diversity Policy.

  • Inclusive Teaching and Learning

We think an ‘inclusive curriculum’ is a good curriculum – one designed, planned and delivered to enable every student to succeed, regardless of educational, dispositional, circumstantial or cultural background.

Our Inclusive Curriculum programme joins up and embeds good practice to improve our learning experience.

  • Disability and Neurodiversity Support

We offer a range of support from Study Skills and dyslexia screening, to personalised learning plans and disabled students’ allowances and more.

Our Disability Support team ensures a student’s disability, health condition, or Specific Learning Difficulty does not disadvantage their learning. It also provides advice about support from Manchester Met and external agencies.

  • Race Equality

We all have a role in strengthening race equality in our communities and creating an environment where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.

Our BAME Ambassador Scheme is a student-led collaboration between The Union and University to improve the student experience and close the awarding gap for Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) students. Ambassadors develop and deliver campaigns and events for students, as well as working with staff and the Students’ Union to feedback students’ views to influence positive change.

Listen to Leonie and Bethany as they tell us more about the scheme.

  • LGBTQ+

We have zero tolerance for discrimination and harassment on the grounds of sexual orientation or transgender status and are proud of students and staff who support the rights of our LGBTQIA+ community.

Our Students’ Union LGBT+ Society hosts events throughout the year which are a great place to meet new people, supporters and allies.

Our Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing team is available for anyone seeking confidential assistance or support in expressing and exploring their identity on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

  • Gender Equality

    Gender Identity, Expression and Presentation

We recognise there can be differences between biological sex and gender identity, expression, or presentation. We support each individual’s right to change their gender expression and/or presentation in line with their preferred gender identity and to choose whether to be open about it.

  • Additional caring responsibilities or more complex circumstances

Our Inclusion Service provides specialist support and advice to students who are:

    • Care leavers
    • Estranged from their family
    • Carers
    • Under 18
    • Pregnant

University life can bring particular challenges including social isolation, pressures on time, and financial concerns, all of which can have an impact on your wellbeing and ability to study.

Your Inclusion Adviser can provide information about the support you can access from Manchester Met and external agencies.

  • Inclusive support and reporting

    Mental health support

Good mental health and wellbeing are essential to everyone’s success. We have invested significantly in our student mental health and wellbeing services, which you can find out more about in our Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy‌.

    • Our Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing team offers one-to-one support, wellbeing workshops and courses as well as guidance on many topics
    • Togetherall is a free, 24/7, online community for students staffed by trained clinicians. It’s anonymous, so it’s a safe place to talk and share your feelings

Hear from Sinead and Milan as they share their stories of how they were helped by the wellbeing services at Manchester Met.

    Students’ Union

At the Union’s Advice Centre you will find a listening ear and experienced, trained staff offering specialist, free and totally independent student-centred advice.

    Report and Support

Everyone has the right to feel safe and not to experience any form of discrimination, hate crime or violence on or off campus.

There are many ways to report an incident including through our Report + Support website and you can choose to do this anonymously. Our Student Services team monitors incident reports and will be in contact within a working day to discuss the incident and offer support.

You can also read further guidance on reporting a hate crime and our procedure for students on disclosing and reporting incidents of sexual violence, misconduct and harassment

  • Black History Month Events

Manchester Metropolitan University is marking Black History Month in October 2021 with a series of online and on-campus events, including talks, discussions, film screenings and performances. See the schedule of events for more details.
