Year in review – looking back on 2019’s top student stories

From life-changing CPR to Countdown conundrums

2019 has been a fantastic year for Manchester Metropolitan and over the coming weeks we will be showcasing the great work and successes of our students and staff members as we build up to Christmas in our ‘Year in review’ round-ups.  

In this week’s ‘Year in review’ we will be celebrating our 2019 student success stories: 

January, February and March  

During January, Lanscape Architecture students Stella Yang and Karsan Karavadra, created a winning learner garden design as part of the Royal Horticultural Society competition.  

Our Manchester Met student athletes brought home 12 medals at the BUCS Nationals in February, with particular success in Swimming and Karate.  

Manchester School of Art students and alumni scooped three prestigious film awards during March at the Royal Television Society’s North West Student Awards.

April, May and June 

April saw final-year Adult Nursing student, Natalie Brookes, host a life-saving skills event to help people deliver basic vital care in critical situations.  

During May, our Rugby Union Sevens team saw success on their China tour and were crowned winners of the China-UK University Sports Week

First-year Maths student, Elliott Mellor, started his record-breaking Countdown appearance in June, achieving the highest-ever debut score of 131.  

July, August and September  

During July, our Interior Design, Textiles in Practice and Three Dimensional Design students’ talents were showcased at the Manchester International Festival.  

Fashion Student, Zoe Lola Dixon, designed a limited edition Manchester City FC kit which was on sale to celebrate Manchester Pride throughout August.  

Sports Scholar, Tully Kearney, celebrated a golden hat-trick in September at the World Para Swimming Championships.

October, November and December  

Photography graduate, Maria Ansell, was selected as a featured photographer in the prestigious British Journal of Photography during October. 

November saw MA Fashion Business students Rebecca and Melissa Everett produce a range of stylish garments that can adapt to the needs of people with a range of disabilities. 

During December, Fashion students Anja Cox Cunningham and Joe Mccarthy, designed our new MMU Sport kit that is being worn by all 43 University sports teams.
