Personal Learning Plan

A Personal Learning Plan (PLP) is a document that outlines the support or ‘reasonable adjustments’ that the University will put in place for you to support your study due to your disability-related needs. It also includes a list of your responsibilities.

Your PLP is sent to teaching staff and other relevant staff in your department. It advises them of any reasonable adjustments they may need to make. You should be given the opportunity to discuss your PLP with a tutor.

How to get a PLP

Once you have registered with the Disability Service and you have provided the required information and medical evidence confirming your disability, we will contact you to arrange an appointment with a Disability Adviser to create a PLP.

Your PLP appointment

In your PLP appointment, a Disability Adviser will meet with you to discuss how your disability affects your studies. We will use your medical evidence to help us decide what adjustments you might need to the way in which you are taught and assessed. We will also consider whether you have any difficulties accessing the buildings in the University. All the adjustments will be outlined in your PLP at the appointment, where you will be able to see what has been included and agree any changes.

You will also be given advice about support available at the University and about applying external support such as Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) if you are eligible.

  • Who will get a copy of my PLP?

If we have your consent, your PLP will be sent to staff involved in your teaching, the Library and the Examinations and Assessments Team. You will also receive a copy your PLP via your student email account.

We aim to minimize the information we share about you wherever possible. Detailed information about the nature of your disability is shared only where necessary for adjustments to be made. You can read more about how we manage your information.

  • Can my PLP be reviewed if it isn't meeting my needs?

It is possible to review and amend your PLP at any point during your course if your circumstances change or if any disability-related difficulties occur which were not anticipated. However, you may be required to provide additional medical evidence. Contact us to arrange a review appointment.

  • I have a PLP - what should I do if I can't hand my coursework in on time?

Does your PLP state that you can negotiate revised submission deadlines?

If yes - and you are experiencing difficulties meeting deadlines for reasons related to your disability

The expectation is that, as far as possible, you will meet all coursework deadlines. However, you can discuss and may be able to renegotiate coursework deadlines for reasons related to disability by speaking to your tutor well in advance of the deadline.

    • Make an appointment with the Departmental Disability Coordinator to discuss your needs and where appropriate agree on a revised submission deadline.
    • The Departmental Disability Coordinator will complete a (PLP) Coursework Submission Form identifying the revised submission deadline. You will be given a copy and a copy will be forwarded to the Assessments Team.
    • The revised submission date will show in your ‘My Assessments’ area in Moodle.
    • If you have been absent from the university and were unable to request a revised submission deadline or have missed your deadline for reasons related to your disability (e.g. hospital admission), please speak to your Departmental Disability Coordinator.
If yes - BUT the reasons you are experiencing difficulties meeting deadlines are NOT related to your disability i.e. an illness not related to your disability or a family bereavement:

You can request an extension via the relevant Moodle Unit Area in accordance with the Assessment Mitigations Procedure

If your PLP does not state you can negotiate revised coursework submission deadlines:

If you are experiencing difficulty meeting deadlines for reasons related to a disability (e.g. condition has deteriorated), please contact us to speak to a Disability Adviser. If non-disability factors prevent you from attending, completing or submitting an assessment on time, you can request an extension via the relevant Moodle Unit Area in accordance with the Assessment Mitigations Procedure.
