Why did your company choose to offer Degree Apprenticeships?

We were very excited to offer the Degree Apprenticeship programme in 2019 and 2020 to complement other recruitment streams already in place at Syngenta’s Huddersfield Manufacturing Centre.  

We have a long and rich history of recruiting from school and colleges and supporting young apprentices on the first steps of their career. Since our latest programme began in 2009 we have recruited over 50 young people to one of our apprenticeship programmes at Huddersfield in manufacturing, engineering, science, business administration, design and logistics.

The Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship programme offers something quite unique, an opportunity for the apprentice to apply their University teachings to the industrial laboratory environment in a timely manner. We feel that being able to relate the theory to the practical aspects in this way serves to reinforce the learning process.

Syngenta benefits from highly motivated, skilled individuals that are very well placed for a long and rewarding career within the company. 

How has your company benefited from the work done by your Degree Apprentices?

Our apprentices are already making a valued contribution to the manufacturing business. So far, their work has included chemical analysis, process hazard assessments and process developments to support the manufacturing operations for our crop protection products.

From a non-technical perspective, they have supported several team building activities within the department, organised demonstrations at our community laboratory (for school children) and helped with our recruitment processes.

Why did you choose Manchester Met and how have you found working with us?

Manchester Met was chosen based on their reputation for delivering apprenticeships to a high standard and the content of the degree and associated personal development programme (skills, behaviours, knowledge) matches our workplace requirements.  

I’ve found the Manchester Met team to be very approachable, professional, and welcoming of feedback from both the apprentices and industrial partners. The regular Employer Advisory Board meetings provide an opportunity to give feedback and make suggestions to shape the programme.

Would you recommend Degree Apprenticeships and Manchester Met to other employers?

Yes, I’d highly recommend Manchester Met and their Degree Apprenticeship programme. I’m very much looking forward to working with Manchester Met in 2021 and to recruit a new apprentice for the 2021 cohort!
