If you have problems with your student visa

If your visa application is refused

The first step is to confirm if UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) refused you on correct grounds.

To help you do this, email immigration@mmu.ac.uk with a copy of the full visa refusal notice as quickly as possible.

Visa refusals affect you and the University as your Student Visa sponsor - where possible we will help you challenge the decision.

Once we’ve reviewed the refusal, we’ll advise you on the next steps. That could either be providing a new CAS number to support a new visa application (if there’s still time for you to arrive) or by asking you to submit an administrative review to UKVI to challenge the decision.

If your visa application is delayed

If you are applying from your home country, you can check how quickly you’ll receive a decision on your UK visa.

If you are extending your Student Visa inside the UK, it should take around eight weeks to process. You can usually continue with your studies during this time.

Your CAS will include your actual course start date and the latest date you may arrive to start your studies. This date has been agreed with your tutors. If you are delayed and unlikely to arrive in time, please contact admissions. You may need to defer your studies.

If your arrival at the University is delayed because of your visa, extra support will be available to make sure your catch up with anything you may have missed.

If your visa is incorrect

When you get your biometric residence permit (BRP), you will need to check it has the correct information.

This includes:

  • Your personal details - such as name, gender and date of birth.

You should also check it has the correct information for your conditions of stay in the UK:

  • You should be eligible to work 20 hours a week for degree level study and above.
  • You should be able to work 10 hours a week for a foundation course or English language programme.
  • If you are studying on a visit or short-term study visa, you will not be able to work part-time.
  • For courses longer than 12 months, the end date on your visa should be four months after the course end date shown on your CAS.

If you think that there may be an error on your BRP, please email immigration@mmu.ac.uk so that we can check it for you. Please do this straight away as there may be a deadline for you to report the error by and receive a free replacement.

  • If there is an error on your BRP and you applied outside the UK, you can report a problem online. Any corrections made are free as long as you report them on time.
  • If you applied for a visa extension inside the UK and you need to report an error, you should ask for a visa administrative review. UKVI will refund the review charge if they agree that there is an error.

When your BRP is re-issued, we will need to update your student record with your new BRP details. You can help us do this by emailing VisaCompliance@mmu.ac.uk with a copy of the front and back of your new BRP.
