Overview

From football matches to music festivals, with the biggest crowds come a range of risks. This masters course is all about mitigating those risks and managing security – teaching you the science behind protecting the public.

Designed for professionals, it’s a perfect fit if you’re already working in the field and you’re looking to progress to the top, or if you work in another area but your ambitions lie in a specialist crowd management role.

You’ll get to grips with the way crowds work, explore the anatomy of major incidents and learn the techniques to help you control crowds safely, with real-time decision support tools. From there, you’ll be ready to tackle your masters-level dissertation – choosing the topic, carrying out research and producing a detailed report.

You’ll be taught by Professor Keith Still who develops training for first responders, emergency planners, and police forces in India, Dubai, Australia and Europe. 

Over the last three decades, he has consulted on extremely challenging crowd safety projects including President Trump’s Inauguration and the Royal Wedding.

Entry requirements

Any UK Honours undergraduate degree with 2:2 or higher (or international equivalent). Entry may also be considered on the ability to demonstrate extensive industry experience with managing crowds, managerial experience linked to crowds or employment within a position of considerable responsibility.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.

Course details

Every day, there’s a festival, match or parade somewhere in the world. And wherever the crowds gather, the risks grow. With the skills to tackle those risks, this masters doesn’t just offer professional opportunity – it provides expertise that can save lives.

It’s one of the few courses of its kind, created to meet the global demand for qualified consultants. Designed by one of the leaders of the field, it’s not only shaped by the latest thinking, but offers the chance to work on live projects for real clients. The result - a formal qualification that can open doors, together with the expertise to protect the public.

In your first year, you’ll get to grips with crowd science, with two units exploring how to model, map and predict crowd behaviour. For your second year, you’ll cover a unit looking at major incidents and the investigations that follow, together with a unit that equips you with real-time decision support tools. Finally, in your third year, you’ll work on a dissertation project, producing a detailed analytical report.

Core Units

Crowd Science

Crowd Science outlines the uses and applications of the crowd and event modelling approach to risk analysis. In this unit we demonstrate the applications of the DIM-ICE meta model, RAMP Analysis, Risk and Congestion Mapping, and Decision support matrix/analysis methods. By the end of this unit, you will be modelling crowd risks for events.

Crowd and Event Modelling

Crowd and Event Modelling uses crowd science and introduces the student to the use and application of crowd simulations for more complex environments (such as religious festivals, mass gatherings in city streets, transport systems and sporting events).

Core Units

Major Incidents and Accident Investigations

Major Incident and Accident Investigation reviews previous accidents and incidents involving crowds. You will be introduced to the liability and legal aspects of a major incident and the disaster database where common causes are reviewed. You will also be introduced to the role and responsibility of an expert witness involved in crowd related injuries.

Real-Time Decision Support Tools

Real-time Decision Support reviews the requirements for a control room to evaluate crowds risks in real-time. You will create and use two key systems; the first for real-time fill prediction and the second for real-time evacuation crowd management.

Core Units

Dissertation

The Dissertation is an individual choice (with Tutor's guidance) of a crowd risk and safety research project to produce a report and analysis utilising the core units in the MSc.

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. Specialist Costs

Students should have to have access to a computer and the internet throughout the course as this is an online course. All software needed to be used is either freely available on the internet or free to students on this course once enrolled. There are no other costs in first year.

There is one book which students need to buy in year one. Most other reading materials are freely accessible on the course via links provided by tutors or via the MMU library links, although students may wish to purchase additional reading materials based upon their own preference and requirement.

Placement Costs

35-55 per night is the approximate average accommodation cost based on a 2 star basis.

Students embarking on this course attend an intensive study period each year (5 days in year 1, 2-3 days in years 2 and 3). Whilst there is no additional fee for this week, students will have to provide transport, accommodation and sustenance for themselves during that time. This will be the student's responsibility to arrange and pay for and is not covered in the fee payable to the university. The costs here do not include transportation costs, as this is subjective for each student. However, Manchester is an excellent transportation hub for many different types of transportation from local, national and international locations
