Develop a deep understanding of the industry

During this course you’ll learn how to assess major influences that shape the industry, but more importantly, how to respond to them.

Combined with industry visits and professional work placements, this course gives you with the real-world knowledge of how to manage tourist operations, attractions, resorts and more.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take a 36-48 week internship where you’ll put your freshly developed skills into practice. This will lay the foundation of your career and begin shaping your CV for your future in tourism management.

Entry requirements

This course is available to graduates holding at least a 2:2 UK Honours degree (or international equivalent) from any subject. Candidates with industry-relevant management experience may be considered.

Course details

The MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management course is underpinned by relevant management theory and contemporary research, with the aim to advance your critical thinking and writing skills. Importantly, the course has been designed in consultation with a number of industry practitioners from a wide variety of international tourism and hospitality organisations. Overall, emphasis has been given in offering you many opportunities to develop advanced academic knowledge and skills, as well as to develop strong employability skills and relevant professional experience.

The course is comprised of a combination of taught units, live experiential activities and client-based consultancy projects. In addition, the programme includes several opportunities to network with industry through domestic and international visits and guest lectures

While you study with us, you will also have the opportunity to attend relevant conferences and conventions that we organise or host at Manchester Met. This will provide you excellent opportunities to develop your knowledge and your international network in tourism and hospitality.

Your studies will have an international focus to reflect the global nature of tourism and hospitality.

You may choose to apply for the MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management with Internship. 

When you have successfully completed your taught units, you will have the opportunity to undertake a 36-48 week placement. This will be your 2ndyear of study. You will be supported by our Placement Office, who have extensive contacts with the tourism and hospitality industries and over 25 years of experience of helping students to find placements. The Placement Office advertise a variety of opportunities, support and advise on the application and recruitment process and continue to support you whilst you are away from the University. 

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A Masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

Internships 

When you have successfully completed your taught units, you will have the opportunity to undertake a 36-48 week placement. You will be supported by our Placement Office, who have extensive contacts with the tourism and hospitality industries and over 25 years of experience of helping students to find placements.

The Placement Office advertise a variety of opportunities, support and advise on the application and recruitment process and continue to support you whilst you are away from the University. 

An additional fee applies to the optional internship (usually £1850).

Additional Information

A Masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Part-time students may take a maximum of 90 credits each academic year.

Specialist Costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print some of their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing. In addition to the above, students can choose to go on an international field trip. The estimated cost for this activity is between £300-£500. This is optional and there is a local alternative for any student who chooses not to go.

Placement Costs

When you have successfully completed your taught units, you will have the opportunity to undertake a 36-48 week placement. The cost for the internship year is estimated at £1,850.
