Entry requirements

Normally a good UK honours degree (minimum 2:2), or international equivalent, in any subject. We will also consider your application if you have degree equivalent professional qualifications or significant management experience. 

If your first language is not English and your first degree was not taught in English, you must have an English language score of IELTS 6.5, or equivalent. If your IELTS score is 5.5 we may offer you a place on the proviso that you successfully complete an approved English language course at the University.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.

Course details

Our masters in International Human Resource Management (HRM) with CIPD is a next-step HR qualification with a difference. With its international perspective on HR issues, it’s a perfect fit for someone looking to boost their prospects in an increasingly global market – whether you’ve recently graduated, or you have a few years’ experience under your belt.

Study with us and you’ll develop your knowledge and practical skills across a variety of real-world HR issues. With the support of our team of experienced HR professionals and researchers, you’ll explore everything from the theory and practice of managing people at work, to HR management and employment systems around the world, to issues that shape decision-making in business and HRM. You’ll also explore the latest industry challenges, such as global resourcing and talent management. In short, you’ll learn how a strategic approach to HR can add value to organisations around the world.

Through our Research Methods and Dissertation units you’ll develop the skills you need to identify and investigate the kind of HR issues that impact corporate strategies and practices. You’ll also investigate a complex managerial or business issue, come up with practical recommendations and an implementation strategy – and learn how to communicate that to the management team.

We know hands-on experience is vital to success. That’s why this course includes a work experience placement. It’s the perfect opportunity to see the theory applied in practice, while many use their placement employer as the subject for their research. Our placement team will help you with application and interview skills, ensuring you make the most of the opportunity.

This mix of the theoretical and practical, combined with a truly international outlook and the benefits of our extensive industry network will give you an edge over many traditional HR masters graduates. With this boost to your employment appeal, you’ll leave us ready and able to contribute an international HR perspective to organisations competing in a global environment.

You’ll study six core units and one optional unit. In the core units, you’ll cover the key theoretical aspects of HRM, carry out research and complete a dissertation, exploring a complex managerial or business issue. 

You’ll also complete a work experience placement – note that many students choose to research their dissertations in their placement organisation.

Residential

The Developing Skills for Business Leadership unit is a compulsory unit on your MSc/PGDip programme, and therefore all students need to engage fully with the content and taught sessions. The residential launches the unit and covers approximately one-third of the teaching content. The fee for the residential covers your hotel stay including meals and use of all hotel spa and leisure facilities, all course materials, toolkits and teaching provision.

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A Masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. Additional information about this course

Due to professional body requirements, this course differs from standard University Assessment Regulations in that all units must be passed and no compensation is permitted.

Placement options

As part of the course, you will be given the opportunity to take part in our Postgraduate Internship Programme. It’s not only a taste of the responsibilities and impact you’ll have as an HR professional, but can also offer the setting for your research project. Securing an internship is your responsibility however, our placement team is on hand to support you by advertising roles and helping you with key employability skills, like preparing for an interview, making applications or writing your CV. With a short-term internship, you’ll not only show potential employers that you’re ready to get to work, but also gain practice credits, which can count towards your studies.

While you need to do at least 100 hours of work, starting any time between November and early August, how you do those hours is flexible. You could work full time during a break in your studies, or you might do a day or two a week throughout term time, fitting it around your studies.

Fees

UK and EU students

UK and EU students: Full-time fee: £7,125 to £9,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Non-EU and Channel Island students

Non-EU international and Channel Island students: Full-time fee: £12,375 to £16,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional Information

In addition to tuition fees, a residential fee of £250 is payable.

A Masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Part-time students may take a maximum of 90 credits each academic year.

Specialist Costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.
