Overview

On our part-time course, you’ll develop the skills to lead the design, development and evaluation of simulation and technology enhanced learning (STEL) in healthcare.

It’s designed for practitioners working in education and health and social care roles. Whichever sector you work in, you’ll share your experiences with fellow students to help broaden your knowledge of how organisations use STEL.

You’ll learn through group tutorials and interactive workshops, with activities ranging from role plays, discussions, presentations and games. Our specialist facilities on-campus include an immersive interactive CAVE environment, simulated ward environments and a simulation flat. 

These practical sessions help you to gain a deeper understanding of both curriculum design and evaluation principles, and how they can apply to your practice.

Through the taught units, you’ll critically evaluate STEL methods, from mobile applications, gamification, immersive scenarios to the use of virtual reality. You’ll consider ways to use STEL in practice across health and social care, and how it can help to improve patient safety. 

You’ll use your newly acquired knowledge and skills to develop a work-based project unique to your interests, experiences and workplace. This assignment helps you to develop your professional skills, as well as support innovation and development within your workplace.

The three units on this course all provide 20 credits at Level 7 (masters degree level). You can build up credits and exit with a postgraduate certificate (60 credits) or complete single units as part of your continuing professional development (CPD).

When you complete PgCert STEL, you’re awarded 60 credits at Level 7 (masters level). You can choose to build on these credits to gain a PgDip (120 credits) or full MSc (180 credits) in a related postgraduate healthcare course.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a UK Honours degree (or international equivalent) in a health and social care or education discipline. Applicants with a diploma who have gained sufficient clinical and professional experience are also welcome to apply.

Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.

Course details

Our part-time course is designed for people who are working in, or responsible for, the design, delivery and evaluation of STEL in learning and teaching innovations, assessment and research.

As a graduate, you’ll be able to critically analyse the current evidence behind STEL, how STEL applies to your area of professional practice, and new insights across health and social care.

If you complete the full PgCert, you’ll study three core units, completing an independent study project as one of these units.

You’ll consider topics such as the evidence behind innovation in teaching and learning, teaching methods (such as technologically advanced simulators and video games), and the frameworks that guide simulation-based activities.

Some of the contemporary issues you’ll explore include national and regional strategic priorities, and quality measures. You might also develop a business case or economic evaluation through the core study units.

The Contemporary Issues in Practice unit is an opportunity for you to complete an independent study assignment that reflects on your workplace or interests. Typically, this assignment is 4,500 words and it can take the form of an essay, project or portfolio of evidence.

You can use your independent study project to support a business case, support the evaluation of an innovative development, or to publicise your work in STEL in healthcare.

Core Units

Contemporary Issues in Practice

The content for this unit will be entirely student led. You'll be encouraged to take account of your own practice based issues and negotiate your own content for this unit with your course tutor.

There will be elements of tutor-led learning (including tutorials and directed study for 40 hours) and an independent study aspect for 160 hours.

STEL in Healthcare: Practical Application

This unit is designed for UK and International clinicians, healthcare workers, clinical educators, managers and lecturers in academia involved in, or considering the provision of Simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning (STEL) in healthcare. It will provide participants with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and application of pedagogical principles underpinning the development of STEL in healthcare innovations, facilitation and debriefing for learning, teaching, assessment and research purposes. The unit will require participants to practically demonstrate an evidence-based approach to STEL in healthcare design, facilitation and debriefing.

STEL in Healthcare: Learning Theory, Curriculum Design and Evaluation

We've designed this unit for clinicians, educators and managers in healthcare, and educators and lecturers in academia, who are involved in, or considering embedding simulation and technology enhanced learning (STEL) in learning and teaching innovations, assessment and research. It will provide you with the opportunity to critically evaluate the pedagogical principles underpinning the use of a wide range of STEL modalities (from case studies, mobile applications, gamification, immersive scenarios to the use of virtual reality) in healthcare.

You'll examine and apply theory and evidence-based practice to enhance the ability to design, develop and evaluate a healthcare training course or academic curriculum featuring STEL. Through interactive workshops, you'll gain a deeper understanding of course/curriculum design and evaluation principles and apply them to the context of their own practice.

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. UK and EU students

UK and EU students: Part-time fee: £800 per 20 credits to £945 per 20 credits studied per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Non-EU and Channel Island students

Non-EU international and Channel Island students: Part-time fee: £1723 per 20 credits studied per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 for books and printing. Total optional cost: £400
