Postgraduate Loans

Funding for Postgraduate Loans is different if you normally live in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland*. We have provided an overview of the main eligibility points for each scheme below.

*Moving somewhere to study does not count as normally living there.

England and Wales

Postgraduate Loan up to £10,280 available if you start a course on or after 1st August 2017.

*If your course started before 1 August 2017 (English residents or Nationals only) you can get up to £10,000 for your whole course.

Northern Ireland

Postgraduate non-income assessed Tuition Fee Loan, maximum £5,500 of fee support for the whole course.

Potential £10,000 postgraduate funding available (£5,000 Tuition Fee Loan and £5,000 maintenance support). 

Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) will only fund eligible postgraduate courses in the rest of the United Kingdom if a similar course is not available in Scotland.

Who will be eligible? Applies to England and Wales

Eligibility is dependent on the following criteria:

  • if you’ve studied on a postgraduate course before
  • your course
  • your age
  • your nationality or residency status

You will not be able to get the Postgraduate Loan if you are already getting a student loan for an undergraduate course in the same academic year. 

Which courses and levels of study are eligible? Applies to England and Wales

  • A list of eligible courses at Manchester Met will be published on our website.
  • 1 or 2 year full-time Masters programmes.
  • 2 or 4 year part-time Masters programmes (full-time equivalent).
  • 3 year part-time Masters programmes where there is no full-time equivalent.

Key facts

  • Please note only full Masters courses are eligible for funding: you cannot use any Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) you may have towards completing the course.
  • Please note that Postgraduate Certificates of Education (PGCE) will not be eligible for the Postgraduate Loan, you need to apply for funding for a PGCE as an Undergraduate student.
  • For Master of Architecture (MArch), you must apply for Undergraduate (UG) funding unless you are taking the course part-time or deemed ineligible for UG funding. 

How will the loan be paid? Applies to England and Wales

The Postgraduate Loan will be paid directly to students from the Student Loans Company. The loan available is non-means tested and is up to a maximum of £10,280.

Payment dates for full-time students (course duration 12 months) will be split equally between the following payment dates:

  • Course start date*
  • Course start date plus 4 months
  • Course start date plus 7 months

*You will receive your first payment within 3-5 working days of the University confirming to the Student Loans Company that you have started your course.

Payment for part-time students or courses longer than a 12-month duration will be made equally across the course duration.

Student Finance estimate that they will open for applications in early summer 2017, although you can apply for your postgraduate course now.
