Whether your ambition is to help an athlete smash world records, or improve the quality of life for recovering patients, we can give you the tools to achieve it.

Our Sport and Exercise Science degree covers a broad spectrum of themes across sport and health. You’ll build an understanding of the key disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology, and then have the flexibility to develop specialist skills and knowledge according to your strengths and interests. You'll also have the opportunity to spend an extra year expanding your horizons, working on a placement in industry.

Career Prospects

Thanks to recent high profile sporting events in the UK, sport and exercise are in the spotlight as important ways to improve health and wellbeing. It’s an exciting time to get involved and there are a huge number of opportunities in the sector.

There are a number of careers directly relevant to our Sport and Exercise Science degree. You might want to work as a sports scientist with professional athletes and clubs, within the NHS, or with private healthcare providers. Or maybe you’d like to work as a personal trainer, an exercise professional in a rehabilitation unit, or as an entrepreneur in the leisure industry.

Some of our Sport and Exercise Science graduates choose to go into teaching after studying for a PGCE, while others opt to carry on their studies with a Masters or PhD.

Specific GCSE requirements

GCSE grade C or grade 4 in English Language, Science and Mathematics. GCSE Science and Mathematics requirement may be met through the Level 3 requirements for the course. Please contact the institution if further information is required.

Level 2 Functional Skills English and Mathematics also accepted. BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science also accepted.

Course details

The structure of the course enables students to study biomechanics, physiology and psychology as core units in Years 1 and 2, with the opportunity to select options relating to health or performance and a number of options in your final year which will enable you to focus more on specific areas of interest, or select units with a broader, interdisciplinary focus.

Core Units

Physiological Systems

The Physiological Systems unit introduces students to principles of human physiology at the organ system level with appropriate links to anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry and metabolism, disease pathology, pharmacology and therapeutics.

Sport and Exercise Psychology in Practice

This unit will offer an introduction to sport and exercise psychology using themes relating to the social psychology of sport and health and the cognitive psychology of sport and movement. Significant emphasis will be placed on practical lab-based experiences for students. 

Anatomy for Health and Sport

The unit will develop a basic understanding of human anatomy, body composition assessment and kinesiological analysis.

Mechanical Principles of Movement

This unit introduces the fundamental laws, principles and concepts that describe and explain the way we create and control movement in sport and exercise.

Applied Skills in Sport and Exercise Science

The aim of this unit is to develop students’ academic, personal and professional skills in order to facilitate successful progression through Higher Education and subsequent graduate employment.

During the second year, you will develop more detailed knowledge of the disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, and Biomechanics. You will also select from optional units covering sports performance, injury or health and fitness, which will enable you to shape the programme of study to match your interests and aspirations. Core Units

Methods of Enquiry

The unit will provide students with a foundation in methods of enquiry that will enable them to understand the importance of research in examining aspects of exercise, sport and health.

Biomechanical Principles and Measurement Techniques

The unit aims to consolidate students understanding of basic biomechanical principles and techniques used to measure biomechanical variables.

Sport and Exercise Psychology in Action

This unit will develop students understanding of the theoretical foundations of several current and important issues related to sport and exercise psychology. 

Sport and Exercise Physiology in Practice

The unit will take the student from fundamental systems physiology knowledge acquired in the first year systems physiology unit, to the practical assessment of cardio-respiratory systems in the physiology lab. Students will work towards achieving competency taking resting blood measures using fingertip capillary sampling.

Option Units

Endurance Physiology for Sport and Performance

The unit will take the student from fundamental systems physiology knowledge acquired in the Year 1 Systems Physiology unit, to the application and assessment of such systems in endurance physiology.

Nutritional Physiology

This unit will focus on the role of different nutrients in the human body. In particular, the role of the different macronutrients in the human body will be focused upon with detailed discussion on the absorption, transport, and storage of macronutrients. Nutrition and diet in relation to health and maintenance of body mass will be emphasised. The dietary requirements for specific population groups will also be considered.

Biomechanics of injury

The unit aims to introduce students to the biomechanical aetiology of injuries that commonly occur during sport and exercise. Topics include: types and magnitude of loading experienced by the body during sport and exercise. Relationships between load, deformation, and stress and strain experienced by biological structures. Material properties of biological tissues, and how these are adapted by exercise. Biomechanical aetiology of sport specific injuries, and prevention of injury.

Exercise and Health Physiology

The unit will develop the students physiological understanding of a) how the body responds to acute exercise stress, b) changes that the human body can undergo as a result of physical activity and exercise participation, c) the impact of acute and chronic exercise on ‘fitness’ and health outcomes.

Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology

This unit introduces students to the principles involved in identifying an athlete's psychological needs and designing relevant psychological interventions.

If you opt for the four-year sandwich route, your third year will be spent on placement.

During the final year, you will build your knowledge and skillset to gain the experience and confidence needed to secure graduate employment. You will choose from optional units to ensure the course matches your interests and you will undertake a research project in an area of your choice, working alongside one of our experienced academics. Sport & Physical Activity: Measuring Impact

This unit provides a critique of past and current approaches to measuring outcomes and the impact of sport and physical activity intervention, underpinned by theoretical frameworks, social and political context.

Undergraduate Project or Undergraduate Extended Project

Students will design, implement, and report findings of a research investigation relevant to the Exercise and Sport Sciences and related disciplines.

Option Units

Muscle Physiology

Human skeletal muscle is critical for survival and plays key roles in growth, locomotion and posture, metabolism, thermoregulation and physical protection.  The unique ability of muscle to adapt to genetic/environmental influences is fundamental to its function.  This unit will examine those topics from the perspectives of molecules, genetics, signalling pathways and integrated function.

Cardiorespiratory Physiology in Sport or Exercise

The unit will develop the students physiological understanding of a) how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems respond to sporting and exercise activities b) how cardiorespiratory physiology differs between healthy individuals, disease populations and elite athletes.

Psychology of Pain and Rehabilitation

The unit will focus on the psychological factors impacting on, influencing and underpinning issues related to movement impairment and mental health in a range of contexts and populations. A critical, evidence-based approach will be taken and consideration will be given to how many issues may be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Science of Sport Injury

This unit develops students' knowledge and understanding of the aetiological factors underlying sports injury and the principles of prevention, management and rehabilitation from multi- and inter-disciplinary perspectives.

Sport & Physical Activity: Measuring Impact
Critique of past and current approaches to measuring outcomes and impact of sport and physical activity intervention, underpinned by theoretical frameworks, social and political context.
Clinical Exercise Physiology

This unit will develop the students understanding of health and clinical applications within exercise physiology.

Physical Activity: Cradle to Grave

You will explore various methods of developing life-long physical activity in relation to opportunities afforded, and constraints imposed, during different life stages. 

Physical Activity: Measurement and Intervention

The unit will critically evaluate methods of measurement, intervention and evaluation relating to promoting physical activity in specific populations.

Working in High Performance Sport

This unit explores the working practices of high performance coaching environments. Specifically, this unit focuses upon the use of theory to critically analyse practice – reflective practice, leadership, communities of practice, team cohesion and group dynamics, high performance sport and media, etc.

Profiling Sport Performance

The unit will critically evaluate contemporary and historical methods of measuring and profiling of sports performance. Topics include: Examinations of emerging technologies, historical measurement and evaluation of sports performance, data examinations using SPSS, developing observation templates for measuring human movement.

Performance Biomechanics

This unit addresses the biomechanical factors that limit performance in terrestrial, aquatic and aerial sports and the role of technology in enhancing sports performance.

Clinical Biomechanics

A unit dedicated to the application of biomechanics and motor control in typical, special, and patient populations during gait and balance.

Motor Learning and Expert Performance

This unit will draw upon literature and theory related to motor control to teach students how to use psychological techniques to maximise motor skill learning and expedite skill acquisition in applied contexts.

Psychophysiology of Sport and Exercise Science

This unit will develop students' understanding of the psychophysiological processes underpinning human performance and related interventions.

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises of 360 credits (120 credits per year). Our Sports and Exercise Science degree offers the chance to spend a year getting a taste of professional life. If you choose to go down this route, your degree will take one year longer, with the third year spent working in industry. These optional placements not only give you the opportunity to develop your core skills and learn about how a business really operates in your industry, but also shows employers that you’re ready to get to work. We offer a range of services to help you find the right placement, including employer presentations, advice and placement fairs.

Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences

Part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences hosts a range of specialisms, from physiology and biomechanics, nutrition, to coaching and sport history. Our innovative partnerships with high profile sporting organisations include a unique collaboration with Manchester City Football Club.

Fees

UK, EU and Channel Island students

UK, EU and Channel Island students: Full-time fee: £9,250 per year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.

Non-EU international students

Non-EU international students: Full-time fee: £16,000 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional Information

A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated Masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Other Costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing. Total optional cost: £600

Some travel will be required between Platt Lane Sports Complex and All Saints campus. Total estimated cost: £240 per year
