Upon completion of this departmental unit, students will have the skills, understanding and attributes to bridge the gap from Foundation year to an undergraduate degree programme of their choice. The unit aim is to equip students with the knowledge and understanding in such areas of academic writing, personal and professional development. During the unit students will be able to make connections between theory and practice and gain awareness of the importance of increasing a proficient approach to their academic and personal skills, behaviours and attitudes relating to further academic studies.
The main aim of this unit is introduce students to the vital role that data analysis plays in modern organisations and equip them with related fundamental skills. Students will develop skills in the areas of data handling and processing, analysis and presentation. The unit will focus on the summary and description of data sets using both graphical and statistical approaches. Consideration will also be given as to how data analysis can enhance the ‘intelligence’ of an organisation and, in particular, support the decision making process.
Fundamentals of Marketing
This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of marketing. The core themes will include marketing orientation and practice, the marketing environment, marketing research and marketing applications of consumer psychology and behaviour, digital marketing and the changing approaches to communication, and operations/systems management for marketing.
Finance for Business
The main aim of this unit is to introduce students to the theories and concepts of finance in a business environment. This should cover the basic definitions of this subject and serve as an introduction to further studies in this area, as required.
This unit aims to provide an applied introduction to key theoretical aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics through a range of case studies, policy debates and application to topical issues.
Introduction to Management
This unit will introduce students to the importance of creativity and responsible management in business decision-making, before outlining business strategy. The unit will show how these discrete disciplines are harnessed and used by managers throughout all levels of the organisation. The unit touches upon innovation, creativity and opportunity identification, explores aspects of business ethics and sustainability, and illustrates basic strategies developed by organisations in response to external and internal challenges.
Understanding and Managing People
The main aim of this foundational unit is to enable you to appreciate introductory topics related to understanding and managing people at work. Through studying organisational behaviour, students will cover selected topics at three main levels, comprising individual, group and management level. Academic theory is explored through organisational examples.
Customer Service Management
There is a critical need in all business sectors for the delivery of good customer service and for managers within the service industry this is particularly challenging. This unit will focus on the challenges and strategies for managing customer service particularly in the economic sectors of Events, Hospitality, Sport and Tourism.
