Your foundation year is part of a specific degree course, so you’ll need to apply for a 4-year full time or 5-year sandwich degree, including the foundation year.

Career Prospects

After completing your Foundation Year, you can progress onto our degrees in either Tourism Management, Hospitality Business Management, or Events Management.

Events management

Use your skills to start your career at local authorities and large corporations. Our graduates manage corporate and hospitality events, conferences, exhibitions, festivals and more.



The hospitality industry is the world’s largest employer, so there are plenty of options when you graduate. Our alumni work in roles like Event Operations at Merlin Entertainments, Corporate Sales at the Radisson Blu Hotels and Tourism Marketing with the Welsh Government.



Tourism graduates have a wide range of opportunities in the UK and beyond. Our graduates work for travel companies, tour operators, airlines, visitor attractions, in resort management and with public sector employers.

UCAS tariff points/grades required

72 - 80

A minimum of 72 - 80 Tariff Points from A level grades DDD - CDD or acceptable alternatives (such as level 3 BTEC  Extended Diploma MMP or BTEC Diploma DM).

Specific GCSE requirements

GCSE grade D or grade 3 in English Language and Mathematics. Level 2 Functional Skills English and Mathematics also accepted.

Non Tariffed Qualifications

Pass Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject with a minimum 74 UCAS tariff points.

Course details

All Foundation Year students study the academic skills for higher education unit, which will help you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree-level work. You will also study topics in the tourism, hospitality and events industries, along with marketing and advertising.

Successful completion of the Foundation Year guarantees automatic progression onto Year 1 of the degree you have chosen to study.

You will study the following units:

  • Services in Tourism, Events and Hospitality Management
  • Introduction to Business
  • Academic Skills for Higher Education
  • Business Intelligence
  • English for Academic Study (international students only)

International students who are studying the foundation year at our campus in Manchester are placed on the Foundation Year International route, which offers additional English language study skills and tutor support through the English and Academic Practice unit.

Please note that English for Academic Study, is only applicable to International students taking the Foundation Year.

Core Units

English for Academic Study (for International Students only)

International students and students for whom English is not a first language who are studying the foundation year at our campus in Manchester are placed on the Foundation Year International Route which offers additional English language study skills and tutor support through the English for Academic Study unit which focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking, from within both an academic and general context. The course is designed for non-native English speakers to prepare you for the academic demands of you degree course, as well as helping you with daily English needs. The unit content is largely based on the development of academic skills, notably writing and speaking, to give you confidence in your written work and oral presentations. General English is also focused on, however, as the means to helps you develop your abilities in English communication needed outside the classroom.

Business Intelligence

The aim of the unit is to provide a foundation for the understanding, analysis and interpretation of real-life business data and equip you with a structured approach in using data to identify key business performance metrics and arising issues. You will explore how data is used by businesses, different types of data, statistics, and techniques used to handle, display and interpret data. 

Academic Skills for Higher Education

This unit is designed to help you to develop the skills required to be successful in your academic career.  During this unit, you will cover core themes such as: academic skills, such as HE terminology, assessment formal processes/mechanisms, critical thinking and logical analysis, developing an academic argument, presenting evidence, oral presentations, exam techniques and strategies, independent learning, reading techniques, note taking, learning styles. You will also cover core study skills including: time management and working in teams. Employability skills such as commercial awareness and research skills, personal development planning, self-evaluation/reflection, action planning, target setting and skill acquisition and development will be core themes. General writing skills: Punctuation & sentence structure, report writing, Referencing methods, critical writing, HE academic standard conventions, academic writing styles & their typical features, effective communication - being succinct and concise. Planning for assessed work: purpose, audience, structure, coherence and logical order of information. Research skills: Research principles, conducting research, research design and methodology, analysing and presenting research data, and report writing.

Introduction to Business

This unit facilitates and supports your learning in the area of business. A broad range of topics associated to the internal and external business environments are covered that encompasses theory and its practical application. The unit starts by discussing the development of business in a modern context. Next the 'individual' is focused upon where motivational, role and leadership theory are given context. The unit will then examine both the internal and external business environments. In doing so the unit focuses on organisations, entrepreneurship and the use of SWOT analysis. The external environment will encompass the political, economic, social, technological, ethical and legal issues that modern businesses face. Later, the unit will look at competition of market' and differing types of markets. This will be followed by Marketing and Human Resource management foundational principles.

Services in Tourism, Events and Hospitality Management

The unit will introduce you to the thriving sectors of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management. You will focus on the industry structure, dynamics and the consumer experience of each of these sectors and explore the linkages between them. This will include an examination of the demand perspective and more specifically the consumer experience.

Foundation Year students

UK, EU and Channel Island students: Full-time Foundation Year fee: £9,250 per year for the foundation year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.

Non-EU international students: Full-time Foundation Year fee: £16,000 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)

Additional Information

A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated Masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Specialist Costs


All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print some of their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.

Placement Costs


Students will be given the an opportunity to go on a variety of local field trips during their Foundation Year. In addition students will be offered an optional trip to London. Manchester would be seen as an alternative destination for those students unable to visit London.

Professional Costs

Students at Level 3 may want to participate with several external organisations, these will be highlighted in lectures seminars. Fees for membership presentations vary accordingly to the organisation.
