This two-year foundation degree programme brings together our academic expertise and Manchester City’s fantastic community coaching programmes, offering the very best of both worlds and an integrated path to rewarding career goals.

There are few better places to develop your readiness for a career in sport than the Etihad Campus. This course offers work-based learning in Premier League surroundings, equipping you with the skills, knowledge and experience you will need to find success as a coach or sports programme leader.

Academic experts deliver the programme, providing insight and support during your two years. In addition, you are continually mentored and supported by practitioners from the club’s City in the Community Trust providing perspectives from the real world of delivering community coaching and sport development initiatives.

You will learn how coaching sport improves aspects of mental and physical health. The programme will cover all aspects of project development – from planning and delivering activity, through to measuring impact – to help understand the potential of sporting opportunities to make a positive difference in the community.

Once you’ve finished your two-year programme, you’ll have the option of extending your stay – building on those foundations with a top-up year to achieve a BSc (Hons) qualification.

  • The City Football Academy hosts more than 1,000 young people for free soccer schools run by City in the Community coaches, with 32 hours of such activity each week.

Career Prospects

The UK is in what has been called the decade of sport, with a host of major international events including Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games as well as many world championship competitions. Furthermore, the role of football clubs addressing social issues and the healthy stadia agenda has continued to grow. There are various career paths for graduates of this discipline within sport governing bodies, clubs, organisations, schools, research centres, academic institutions, as well as hospitals and medical centres specialising in health, fitness and rehabilitation.

The work-based learning you will undertake as part of this sports coaching programme will give you the opportunity to try out different future career paths, gain expertise and experience in a particular role within the organisation and apply academic subject knowledge in a real work setting. We feel this is important to ensure that students graduate with a genuine understanding of the role of community football within context whilst also gaining a sound knowledge of the requirements of the specific job opportunities within community football.

Equivalent qualifications and combinations will be considered, including Extended Project (EPQ) at grade C or above. Other AS levels (or qualifications equivalent to AS level) are not accepted.

‘Football is for everyone’: Student volunteers help to make sport more inclusive

The One City Disability Event brings together children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities from secondary schools across Manchester, to the Etihad Campus, for a day of friendly competition and football, three times per year. 

Hosted by Manchester City Football Club’s City in the Community Foundation, and student volunteers from Manchester Metropolitan University, the event offers children who have additional needs an avenue to compete in their own league, and in a professional sporting environment.

Course details

This two-year programme delivers the skills and knowledge required to focus on sports activities with underrepresented groups. These include young people, people with disabilities, older people and women. Football’s potential to reach these underrepresented groups has been recognised by Manchester City and Manchester Met for over three decades. This course looks beyond football and to a range of sports to engage people to improve their quality of life and wellbeing.

Sociological and psychological theories that explain sport’s potential to develop and change behaviour are blended with knowledge of sport in communities. A quarter of your assessed work each year is based on practical experience and a mentored role in supporting City in the Community sports programmes.

Your first year introduces you to coaching practices through a practical unit delivered in Manchester City’s impressive indoor training facility. Further, you will explore concepts in youth sport and sport for development. Throughout the year, you will also access a number of work-based opportunities with City in the Community. Core Units

Introduction to Coaching Practice

This unit introduces you to the role of the coach within the coaching process, building upon the relationship between theory and practice. You will study themes such as the coaching process, theories of learning, coaching methods, performance analysis, practice - planning, delivery and evaluation of coaching sessions and the creation of safe coaching environments.

Introduction to Sport Development

This unit introduces the main principles and background to sport development, and how these are used to explain current practice in the field. You will be introduced to key terminology, concepts and knowledge relating to the sport development process. Topics will include: national agencies and organisations, and the evolution of early modules and their contemporary application in areas of youth and community sport. There will also be a focus on the voluntary sector and community sport clubs, inclusion issues related to sport development addressing equity and participation, underrepresented groups and barriers to sport. You will also gain experience in action planning and programme design for sport development outcomes, basic quantitative data analysis applied to sport participation and graphic and tabular presentation of sport related data and its interpretation.

Work-Based Learning 1

This unit provides you with the opportunity to engage in regular supervised work experience within a variety of football coaching projects led by City in the Community. The focus in year one will be on primary school sports, early years coaching, educational programmes and a variety of community engagement projects.

The unit is designed to develop and evaluate the knowledge, core skills, competencies and proficiencies necessary to working in community coaching environments. It will enable you to apply your knowledge in a practical environment whilst developing the foundations of analysis and independent learning required to underpin work. The tools of critical self-reflection will be developed to identify a skills matrix and appreciation of the requirements for different professional roles.

Youth Sport

You will experience and evaluate methods designed to improve learning and performance in a range of contexts related to PE and youth sport. In this unit, you will review a range of local and national initiatives aimed at increasing participation and performance in youth sport. The motivations and rationale for such schemes will be explored as will their effectiveness. Practical evaluation of methods of engagement, pedagogy and motor development will also be considered.

The second year of this degree continues with the work-based learning theme and explores coaching theory, health and fitness and the development and management of sports projects in diverse communities. Units typically include the following (this list is indicative and may change).

Core Units

Coaching Theory

This unit explores the principles and practices underpinning sports coaching. Specifically, focusing upon using theory to develop coaching practice. You will study the coaching process, coaching and philosophy, coaching as a social process, experimental learning in sports coaching and coaching behaviour. You will also look at athlete learning, the analysis of sports performance individualisation, progression and regression of coaching sessions and the use of reflective practice in sports coaching.

Developing Health and Fitness

This unit is concerned with factors which influence children's health, and how this affects their ability to engage in physical activity. You will be equipped with knowledge and understanding of the relationship between children's health and physical activity and the influence of diet and physical activity on children's health. It will address issues such as assessment and development of children's physical fitness and physical activity, the influence of growth and maturation on children's ability to engage in suitable physical activity, as well as sports performance, obesity, bone health and development of coronary heart disease.

Project Event Management

This unit explores the planning of events, their operations and logistics, costing and evaluation. You will focus on the stages of planning, funding, running and evaluating a sport based community project. Work-Based Learning 2

This unit provides you with the opportunity to continue your engagement in regular supervised work experience within a variety of football coaching projects led by City in the Community. The focus in year two will be on primary school sports, early years coaching, BTEC youth team coaching, football development coaching and project event management.

BSc (Hons) top-up year

After you have completed your Foundation Degree you will have the option to progress on to a one-year top-up which will lead to a BSc (Hons) qualification.

Assessment weightings and contact hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises of 360 credits (120 credits per year). The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

Each year you will complete four 30 credit units. 30 credits requires 300 hours of study composed of lectures, practical sessions, seminars/ webinars and independent study.

This two-year degree will typically comprise of 240 credits (120 credits per year) with the option to top-up in with a third year for 360 credits and a BSc (Hons) qualification. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your style of learning and the nature of the assessment. Students are assessed through a mixture of essay writing, coaching practicals, work- based learning portfolios, research projects and presentations.

Placement options

The programme is built around work-based learning and will include placements at each level working with City in the Community on a variety of football schemes.

Work-based learning is built into the course and you will typically spend 12 hours per week completing the work-based modules. They will give you the opportunity to explore all project areas within City in the Community and gain valuable, hands-on experience with project planning and delivery, monitoring and evaluating processes and quality assurance.

During Years 1 and 2, students will complete work-based learning in eight areas across the key themes of health, inclusion and education.

Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences

Part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences hosts a range of specialisms, from physiology and biomechanics, nutrition, to coaching and sport history. Our innovative partnerships with high profile sporting organisations include a unique collaboration with Manchester City Football Club.

UK, EU and Channel Island students

UK, EU and Channel Island students: Full-time fee: £9,250 per year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.

Non-EU international students

Non-EU international students: Full-time fee: £16,500 per year. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional Information

A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated Masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Kit (compulsory): Students on the Etihad Campus-based programmes will be required to purchase MCFC kit from the online shop at Manchester Met. The kit is mandatory and must be worn while on the Etihad Campus and while on work-based learning and course related placements. Estimated cost will be £100 per student.

Academy meal offer (optional): Student can pay by monthly direct debit to access the healthy eating options offered by the MCFC Academy menu for £7.70 per lunch. Note: this requires a minimum of ten students to register for the healthy eating plan.
