Overview

The best marketers see the bigger picture - they look at the business landscape, identify new markets, new products and services and opportunities to influence audiences and customers, and spot the threats that could damage the business.

This course prepares you for studying our BA (Hons) Marketing degree.

It will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to study for an honours degree, even if you don’t currently meet the academic requirements.

Once you’ve passed, you’ll be ready to start your degree course. That means your degree will take four years, or five years if it includes a work placement or year studying abroad.

On the full degree programme, you’ll look at different media and methods of communication, study how to analyse and segment audiences, and discover how to craft and deliver the right message at the right time.

To start with, you’ll learn about marketing fundamentals, but you’ll also have the flexibility to choose units that interest you most as you progress. By the time you leave us, you’ll not only understand the theory behind effective marketing – you’ll also have a range of practical, professional skills.

Core Units

Study Skills

Upon completion of this departmental unit, students will have the skills, understanding and attributes to bridge the gap from Foundation year to an undergraduate degree programme of their choice. The unit aim is to equip students with the knowledge and understanding in such areas of academic writing, personal and professional development. During the unit students will be able to make connections between theory and practice and gain awareness of the importance of increasing a proficient approach to their academic and personal skills, behaviours and attitudes relating to further academic studies.

Business Intelligence

The main aim of this unit is introduce students to the vital role that data analysis plays in modern organisations and equip them with related fundamental skills. Students will develop skills in the areas of data handling and processing, analysis and presentation. The unit will focus on the summary and description of data sets using both graphical and statistical approaches. Consideration will also be given as to how data analysis can enhance the ‘intelligence’ of an organisation and, in particular, support the decision making process.

Fundamentals of Marketing

This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of marketing. The core themes will include marketing orientation and practice, the marketing environment, marketing research and marketing applications of consumer psychology and behaviour, digital marketing and the changing approaches to communication, and operations/systems management for marketing.

Finance for Business

The main aim of this unit is to introduce students to the theories and concepts of finance in a business environment. This should cover the basic definitions of this subject and serve as an introduction to further studies in this area, as required.

Business Economics

This unit aims to provide an applied introduction to key theoretical aspects of microeconomics and macroeconomics through a range of case studies, policy debates and application to topical issues.

Introduction to Management

This unit will introduce students to the importance of creativity and responsible management in business decision-making, before outlining business strategy. The unit will show how these discrete disciplines are harnessed and used by managers throughout all levels of the organisation. The unit touches upon innovation, creativity and opportunity identification, explores aspects of business ethics and sustainability, and illustrates basic strategies developed by organisations in response to external and internal challenges.

Understanding and Managing People

The main aim of this foundational unit is to enable you to appreciate introductory topics related to understanding and managing people at work. Through studying organisational behaviour, students will cover selected topics at three main levels, comprising individual, group and management level. Academic theory is explored through organisational examples.

Customer Service Management

There is a critical need in all business sectors for the delivery of good customer service and for managers within the service industry this is particularly challenging. This unit will focus on the challenges and strategies for managing customer service particularly in the economic sectors of Events, Hospitality, Sport and Tourism. 

Placement options

If you choose the placement route of the linked honours degree you will include a minimum of 36 weeks work experience as part of your degree studies. Our dedicated placement team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers and will help you find a placement.

Fees

Foundation Year students

UK, EU and Channel Island students: Full-time Foundation Year fee: £9,250 per year for the foundation year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.

Non-EU international students: Full-time Foundation Year fee: £16,500 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)

Additional Information

A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated Masters 480 credits. The tuition fee for the placement year for those courses that offer this option is £1,850, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study). The tuition fee for the study year abroad for those courses that offer this option is £1,385, subject to inflationary increases based on government policy and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

Additional costs

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing. Total optional cost: £600
