Components

Everybody who comes to Manchester Met is different, and our courses are designed to reflect that. We offer a range of options to suit individual needs, and make it easier for you to study for an undergraduate degree with us. These include foundation years and options to study part-time or through distance learning if your circumstances mean that traditional university study might not work for you.

  • Part-time degrees

Our part-time qualifications are designed to fit around your commitments. Enrolling on a part-time course allows you to study at your own pace, gradually gaining credits which count towards your final qualification. Part-time study also enables you to spread the cost of taking a degree over a longer period.

Some of our full-time courses feature a part-time study option, generally through evening study or day release. View the relevant course page to see if your chosen subject offers part-time study options.

  • Foundation Year

There are many reasons why you might choose to study a Foundation Year; maybe you don’t meet the entry requirements for a full honours degree, or perhaps you want to study something new. If you have the ability and ambition to study for a degree but don’t meet the academic entry requirements to enter directly onto a degree course, then a Foundation Year could be the right route for you.

The Foundation Year is an integral part of your degree. Your course will take four years, or five years if a placement or year abroad is available on your degree. Once you have passed the Foundation Year you will progress directly onto Year 1 of the linked honours degree - you do not need to reapply through UCAS.

If you are a new, full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course.

Like all our full-time undergraduate degrees, you’ll need to apply through UCAS. Each degree with a Foundation Year has its own unique UCAS code – which you can find on the UCAS website.

You’ll study four units designed to build your confidence and bring you up to speed for the rest of your chosen degree. These include three units that provide an introduction to your subject, and a unit designed to develop your academic and study skills that you’ll need for degree-level study. For international students, we also offer a unit that provides extra English language study support. You can find more details about the units in your Foundation Year – and the years after that – on our online prospectus.

We use a range of methods to teach our students, depending on the course. This involves a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, laboratory sessions and online learning. You’ll also spend time each week on independent study. Your Foundation Year will be assessed by coursework and formal exams.

  • Distance learning

Distance learning is a way to study for a qualification without needing to regularly be on campus. Most learning will be done remotely, using electronic resources. We currently offer distance learning courses in BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science and BSc Sport Coaching and Development.

    On these courses:

    • learning materials will include multimedia eBooks, videos, webinars and textbooks
    • interactive materials will be available in our virtual learning environment
    • tutorial support is available via email, telephone, Teams and in person at Manchester Met, with academic specialists teaching on every unit of study
  • Work-based learning - degree apprenticeships

Degree apprenticeships are a great route to an exciting new career, or for employees who want to develop their skills and capabilities with the support of their employer.

You will be paid throughout your course and there are no tuition fees. That could mean a debt-free university experience. Read more about degree apprenticeships.
