About carbon literacy

Organisations of all kinds can play a pivotal role in addressing the climate crisis, through informed management of their own carbon emissions as well as the influence they have on society.

Carbon literacy training can help any organisation move to a low-carbon future.

Manchester Met is a certified Carbon Literacy Training Organisation (CLTO).

Our specialist consultants and trainers work with public and private sector partners, providing direct training and free-to-use, sector-specific training toolkits. We’ve trained people in Arup, Climate Ready Gwent, and Natural Resources Wales, and run our train-the-trainer course with Keep Scotland Beautiful and Cynnal Cymru.

For those working in further or higher education, our popular Carbon Literacy for Universities and Colleges Toolkits are available at no cost.

We’ve already shared the toolkits with more than 160 institutions, helping thousands of people get certified as carbon literate.

    Dates: TBC

    Course outline

The train-the-trainer course consists of three parts:

    1. Preparatory

Participants will familiarise themselves with essential aspects of the carbon literacy standard and how to accredit a course. They will also learn about the training activities they will be delivering in Part 3.

This part of the course is entirely self-study based.

    2. Theory

The theory module consists of four modules, each consisting of a webinar and self-directed study. Each webinar will last 2.5 hours and the self-study is expected to take up to one hour.

    • Introduction: What makes a good trainer, catering for different learning styles
    • Trainer skills: Presentation & communication skills
    • Session management: Time management, dealing with challenging behaviours and worst-case scenarios.
    • Respectful and inclusive practice: Inclusivity and boundaries
    3. Activity Practice

Participants will practice preparing and delivering online activities in a supportive environment.

Each participant will be allocated an activity from our toolkit. Their task is to set up the activity in a Zoom meeting, prepare ahead of their session and then deliver the activity to the rest of the group. Once they have delivered their activity, they will get constructive feedback from their peers and the programme leader.

    Frequently asked questions

What is required of the participant?

To make this experience as valuable as possible for each participant, all participants should attend and actively engage in each online webinar. They also need to set aside time to complete the self-directed study.

Does the programme cover the science of climate change?

Being a carbon literacy trainer does not need climate change expertise. The most important skill is the ability to facilitate discussions among participants that enable them to come to their own conclusions and devise their own solutions. This is why the train-the-trainer programme focuses on developing trainer skills rather than explicitly covering the science of climate change.

Will the participant gain a certification upon completing this programme?

The participant will not receive a certificate upon completing the programme. As the programme is recognised by the Carbon Literacy Project it can be used when applying for the Certified Carbon Literacy Trainer qualification.
