Help Manchester become a world-leading city for action on climate change!
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we are currently facing and it will affect all aspects of society. In recognition of this, the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has pledged to make the region carbon neutral by 2038.
To achieve this, all Manchester residents’ have been called to undertake 15 actions to help improve our city and put Manchester on the map as one of the world’s leading cities for action on climate change.
As a University, we have already taken the first action, committing to be a Zero Carbon University by 2038.
The second action is to improve climate change education, giving individuals a clear understanding of how their everyday decisions are generating carbon emissions and affecting the world right now. As staff at one of Manchester’s flagship educational institutions, we have a crucial role to play in embedding this understanding and enabling the transition to a zero carbon city.
The United Nations have recognised the Carbon Literacy Project as one of 100 worldwide Transformative Action Programs. Manchester Met has already been working with the Carbon Literacy Project delivering training to over 1000 of our students since 2012. Now, to help facilitate the second call to action, staff can join in too!
Learning alongside colleagues and students, you will gain an understanding of:
The Carbon Literacy training consists of two parts (completion of both is required to receive certification).
Part 1: Film Screening
In the first part of your Carbon Literacy training, you need to attend the film screening of David Attenborough’s Climate Change: The Facts.
Part 2: Workshop
The second part of the training is a workshop led by Manchester Met’s Carbon Literacy trainers. In this fun and engaging session, you will learn about what you can do to act on climate change as well as how you can persuade others to do the same.
