Steve Rothberg joined Manchester Metropolitan University in January 2023. As Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he is responsible for planning and academic resourcing, working alongside the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malcolm Press, on strategy and delivery. He manages the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors, and leads on regional and business engagement.

His national roles include membership of the EPSRC Research Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Team and Panel Chair for Athena Swan gender equality awards.  

Steve is Professor of Vibration Engineering. He gained his BSc and PhD at the University of Southampton, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, and joined Loughborough University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. His research in noise and vibration, particularly in the application of laser technology for vibration and motion measurements, has attracted awards from the National Physical Laboratory and the Society of Experimental Mechanics, and contributed to Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Optical Engineering and High-value Manufacturing. His innovations in teaching led to creation of Loughborough’s Engineering Teaching and Learning Support Centre which went on to gain Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) status.

While at Loughborough, Steve became the Head of the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in 2001, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (2007-11), Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise (2011-14), and then Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research in 2014, leading Loughborough’s successful REF 2021 submission.
