Working at Manchester Met

People are at the heart of everything we do. The right people, drawn from diverse backgrounds and experiences, are central to the realisation of our ambitions.

We are proud to directly employ colleagues at every level across the University. We look to colleagues to collaborate and contribute sharing their ideas, making their voices heard, and working together across teams.

We are student-centred, and people-led, championing an inclusive and diverse community, and celebrating our colleagues’ successes and achievements.

Feel supported and valued as a member of our community.

Work-life balance

We recognise that the world of work is ever changing, technology is advancing, and people have busy lives, with different hobbies, interests, and commitments outside of the workplace. We are proud to offer and support many different flexible working arrangements.

Many academics already have flexibility built into their working arrangements where some aspects of academic work may be undertaken remotely. This flexibility extends to our Professional Services colleagues, offering the opportunity for some roles to be worked partly on campus and remotely from home.

Professional Services is a diverse group with different functions, stakeholders, sizes and working practices, so hybrid working is not applied as a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Our guidance outlines four different hybrid working categories used to determine the extent to which hybrid working can be applied to different roles, prioritising the needs of the University and the team.

Decisions about the suitability of hybrid working are made locally and guidance may change from time to time such as when services, priorities, technology, processes, and procedures change and evolve. If hybrid working is suitable for a role, it will be available to colleagues whether they work full or part-time. More details can be found here.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

We believe that having a diverse and inclusive workforce makes us a stronger University, providing better outcomes for our students, research, and business partners.

Staff Equity Networks

We are advancing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) for all of our communities, striving to create a positive culture of inclusion for all.

The University values its five Staff Equity Networks - Disability, Gender, Rainbow (LGBTQ+), Race and Working Parents & Carers. The staff equity networks provide a voice for University staff to engage with and consult on equality and diversity-related matters, policies and procedures.

Athena Swan Charter Bronze Award

We are proud to have received an institutional Athena SWAN Bronze award showing our commitment to gender equality. The charter aims to advance gender equality in HE and specifically seeks to advance the careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business and Law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women and makes explicit acknowledgement of intersectionality in its remit.

Race Equality Charter Bronze Award

We have been awarded a Bronze Race Equality Charter Award by Advance HE. The award recognises our work to identify and commit to actions we will take to improve the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students.

Disability Confident Leader

We have an accreditation as a Disability Confident Leader, which is a government scheme designed to support in the recruitment and retention of disabled people and those with health conditions. We also hold the Gold award in the Business Disability Standard (now the Disability Smart Audit) being the first university to secure this.

If you are considering making an application, further FAQs for disabled candidates can be found here.

Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme

We have been recognised for our outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community, giving support to members of the Armed Forces and veterans. Manchester Met is one of fewer than 20 universities to receive the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award and offer an Armed Forces guaranteed interview scheme.
