The Manchester Writing School at Manchester Met and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation are delighted to present an evening with Monique Roffey and Catherine Fox. They will be reading from their work and discussing writing (well) about relationships – and how to write good sex.

Monique Roffey was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and has life-long and ongoing links to Trinidad and the Caribbean region. She is the author of six novels, which draw on family biography, history, witness testimony and contain what Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier called lo real maravilloso – the marvellous real. Her memoir, With the Kisses of His Mouth, and her latest novel, The Tryst, examine female sexuality in the 21st century. The Tryst was published by Dodo Ink in the summer of 2017 to substantial critical acclaim.

Catherine Fox is the author of six adult novels, a young adult fantasy, a series of humorous books about the Church of England, and a Judo memoir: From Vicar’s Wife to Killing Machine. Her latest series – The Lindchester Chronicles – was a literary homage to Trollope’s Barchester chronicles, initially blogged in weekly installments, and published as three well-loved, sometimes controversial, novels by Marylebone House, the last, Realms of Glory, in July 2017.

Monique and Catherine are Lecturers in Creative at Manchester Metropolitan University where they teach a course on Writing (Well) About Relationships.

Manchester Writing is a series which explores the techniques authors use and choices they make when writing, and debate issues arising from their work. Monique and Catherine will be reading from and talking about their work in conversation, and answering questions from the audience. The evening will open with a gala drinks reception, and copies of their books will be available from Blackwell’s bookstall, with signing after the event.
