Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today – Student Jamie Glaves wins GCHQ best paper prize

Best Paper Winner - Manchester Met's Jamie Glaves

On Saturday 11th February 2017, the 6th edition of the ‘Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today’ conference series was hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University at its Business School.  The event was based on the theme of “Mathematical Software Applications” and it was organized by the university’s Department of Computing and Mathematics in conjunction with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, represented on the day by Erica Tyson.

Participants attended from universities across the whole of the UK and we are very proud to report that the GCHQ best paper prize was awarded to 3rd year MMath (Hons) Mathematics student, Jamie Glaves, from Manchester Metropolitan University, for his paper ‘Computational Techniques for Sparse Matrices’.

Second prize was awarded to Martin Chak from Imperial College, London for his paper ‘Models of Neurons’. All submitted papers can be found at the conference website.

The day also included a programme of talks with Surak Perera from Maplesoft discussing symbolic computing, Jasmina Lazic from MathWorks on the use of MATLAB for problem solving, Jon McLoone from Wolfram on the design philosophy of Mathematica and the Wolfram Language, and finally, a keynote speech from Manchester Met’s Dr Stephen Lynch entitled ‘Using Technology in Mathematics to Enhance Teaching, Learning, Assessment, Research and Employability’.

This event was kindly sponsored by Maplesoft, Mathworks, Wolfram, and GCHQ, who supplied the prize for the best paper, and the day was an excellent opportunity to showcase the use of mathematical software in a wide range of applications. We would like to thank the speakers for their insightful talks, and all of the students who contributed papers. The next TMT conference will be hosted by the University of York in 2018, to whom we wish the very best of success.
