Welcome Back - A message from Professor Andy Gibson

Happy new year!

This term I want to focus in particular on improving teaching and student experience in Faculty. We need to see an uplift in key metrics such as progression, NSS, good honours and graduate outcomes. As I’m sure you know, this requires a concerted effort from everyone and I am aware of the great work already underway on this.

Our new Head of Education, Dr Fiona Saunders, is now in post and is working closely with educational leads in each School to enhance teaching quality, assessment and feedback processes, academic support, progression, retention and graduate outcomes. Solid performance in all of these areas is key to the uplift we want to see.

The other big initiative I will be continuing to champion personally over the coming months is video resources for students. We will be rolling out video content for everything from lab session recaps to lectures to exam technique tips across all Schools and subjects. It’s a popular channel and form of learning for young people and I know it works really well in an academic environment. I would love to hear your ideas about what would work well in your area and look forward to working with you on this exciting project.

Together we can continue to build a culture of excellence in our students’ experience and I would like to thank all colleagues for your continued hard work and dedication.

And if you are looking for inspiration in the new year, why not sign up to be part of Team MMU in this year’s Manchester 10k? I was one of over 100 staff to do it last May and it was a phenomenal experience, one I highly recommend. It takes place Sunday 20 May 2018 so there’s plenty of time to prepare.
