The Big SciEng Quiz: Full results

The Big Scieng Quiz took place yesterday with an impressive 32 teams and 166 participants.

The quiz started with a general knowledge round to get the brains in gear, with questions on topics of Arthurian legend to table tennis. Next up was history (with a hint of science) and geography, science and nature, a round all about Manchester, a science music round (yes, there are plenty of science music songs to choose from for a quiz round!), and a picture round of famous faces with a Manchester connection. Being a Faculty of Science and Engineering quiz, there had to be questions on the periodic table, triangles, a freshwater lake, parts of the human body and feats of engineering.

Don’t Drink and Derive took the title of ‘Best Team Name’, but there were some imaginative  submissions including The Sherlock Holmies, Literally Talking Rubbish, 01101001 01110100, JD's Alton Towers Field Trip Society and We Came for Pizza. The Marketing Team made an excellent effort to bring together Grease and John Dalton in the name of Science, making badges to match their team name ‘O'Trivia Newton John Dalton’!

Every department in Faculty was represented, with undergraduates, postgraduates, research and academic colleagues all taking part. There were also teams from support services including Tech Services, ISDS, Facilities and Marketing.

A huge thank you to our excellent Quiz Master, Dr Sam Illingworth, who laid down the quiz law fairly and firmly (exact answers only please!) to keep all sceptical scientists in line.

The winning team were students and staff from the Department of Life Sciences. Hanks Diner Sausage Finger Special, who scored 81/100.

1st - Hanks Diner Sausage Finger Special (SOHS Staff and Students) 81/100

2nd - SciCommers (Staff Science Communication) 79/100

3rd - Faraday Cage Fighters (Facilities) 74/100
