Interests and expertise

Mike’s research interests are in critical perspectives of social enterprise. He has published several articles challenging the definition of social enterprise and considering where the ‘social’ is in the transition to an enterprise culture. He has published on outlining three forms of social enterprise; those from a co-operative heritage, a charity heritage and a business heritage that essentially means that social enterprise is a different organisational model in each form.

Mike has led the development of a performance diagnostic and strategic management analysis toolkit called Balance. For further details see Projects.

He is interested in the social solidarity economy, as opposed to a capitalist economy and his post-capitalist research interests has taken him towards literatures such as; moral economy, the ‘commons’, neoliberalism, Polanyi, business ethics, critical management studies, critical accounting and the sociology of value.

A further avenue of research is professional football and the relationship to fans, exploring moral ownership, critical accounting and social & cultural value.

Finally Mike is interested in studying Community Sport Trusts, these are social enterprise / charitable partners to their associated professional football clubs, sharing branding yet acting indepedently in their communities.
