Carol Atkinson is Professor of Human Resource Management at the Business School and is the Faculty’s Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange. Carol’s own research focuses on employment in small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and the adult social care sector together with older workers and older women’s careers.
A former director of the Centre for People and Performance, Carol’s research has won a number of awards including the prestigious CIPD Professor Ian Beardwell prize on two occasions. She has won both research council and organisational funding towards research projects based around working time flexibility, the HR–performance relationship and older workers.
Carol joined our Business School from Bradford University’s School of Management, and at both institutions she has held a wide range of management, teaching and research roles. A number of her external positions include:

Prior to becoming an academic, Carol worked as an HR practitioner in the financial services, retail and voluntary sectors.
