Biography
I joined MMU in June 2018 as a Senior Researcher on the ESRC funded project Understanding Inequalities (UI) which examined the causes and consequences of inequalities in Scottish society and beyond. In April 2021 I was awarded an ESRC ADR UK fellowship to carry out reseach on the extent and drivers of Ethnic Inequalities in the Criminal Justice System. The research draws on Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court datasets created through the Data First (DF) programme led by the Ministry of Justice, to generate new evidence about the experiences and outcomes of ethnic minority groups in the court system; the relative importance of compositional (defendant, case, and court) factors in explaining ethnic differentials in court outcomes at different stages of the CJS; and make recommendations about ways of effectively addressing ethnic inequalities in the CJS.
My research covers a variety of areas including inequality, ethnicity and migration. I am a member of the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit, the Crime and Well Being Big Data Centre, an affiliate member of the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity and the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research, and co-ordinator of the Migration and Families Network which I co-founded in February 2017.Prior to my current role, I was a post-doctoral researcher and a lecturer in the Department of Social Statistics at the University of Manchester. I have also held research posts in the Migration and Border Analysis Unit in the Home Office Science Directorate and the Centre for Urban Policy Studies (CUPS). I gained a PhD in Social Statistics from the University of Manchester in 2014.

Projects
April 2021- Ethnic Inequalities in the Criminal Justice System.The project funded by ESRC ADR UK aims to provide comprehensive evidence on the extent and drivers of ethnic inequalities in the CJS in England and Wales and to provide effective and tangible recommendations to address inequalities.
Feb 2017 - I co-founded (with Dr Lindsey Garratt) the Migration and Families Network which aims to create a platform to share research, practice and policy on migrant families across Europe. The Network has over 100 members including practitioners, academics and students.
