The future of Manchester’s creative industries in ‘safe hands’

Student success at Future Talent in the Creative Industries event

MANCHESTER Met students impressed creative industry leaders during a special skill-developing Future Talent in the Creative Industries event, last month.

With creative industries making up one of the UK’s leading industrial sectors responsible for 1.4 million jobs, the event hosted by the University’s Creative Industries Knowledge Cluster set Manchester Met students apart by developing their skills and providing them with insider advice on how to make it in the industry.

Students worked with the leading practitioners across a range of activities, including a competition which bagged the four winners invitations to The Roses Creative Awards and vouchers for each of the 12 runners-up.

Students were split into teams, given a brief and sent away to work on their campaign plans. The resulting pitches wowed the panel of expert judges. Justin Moore, Business Manager at Become UK and judge, said: “We were all suitably impressed with the creative ideas, knowledge of the creative market, proactive nature and lateral thinking of the students. It’s safe to say the creative future in Manchester is in safe hands.”

Industry experts

The event brought together creative industry experts, postgraduates and academics for a day of talks, networking, skills workshops and competitions. Keynote speaker and Director of the Creative Industries Federation, John Kampfner, was joined by CEOs from leading creative agencies and organisations including:

Dr Jane Tonge, Senior Lecturer in Marketing Communications and cluster leader, said: “With the success of last year’s event, students were once again given the chance to tap into the fantastic partnerships the University has developed within the creative industry.

“The skills students learn on our courses help to prepare them for life in the industry, whether agency or in-house, and the event was a great opportunity for students to engage and impress the leaders of the businesses they will soon be applying to.”

The event was hosted by the Creative Industries Knowledge Cluster in association with the Manchester Publicity Association. The cluster brings together like-minded academics and research students to explore a range of specialist subjects in the creative field, including public relations, reputation management, media relations, digital communications and leadership.
