Meet our Students

Our students come from a range of diverse locations and backgrounds. A large number of our students come from Greater Manchester and the North West region; however, we welcome students from all over the UK.

Emily Wakeland – Q-Step Dissertation Student

My name is Emily Wakeland and I am currently completing a Q-Step Dissertation. The organisation that I am working for is the Lesbian and Gay Foundation. I am using the Crime Survey of England and Wales to look at the experiences and perceptions of the LGB community in relation to crime. I think Q-Step Dissertations are an amazing opportunity, you get to get out there into the world of work and gain some real life experience, you get to meet some great people and you also get to know that you are completing research that matters, not just doing a piece of work that no one will ever look at again. I would thoroughly recommend Q-Step Dissertations to anyone who asks, along with the great experience you gain, you have two dissertation supervisors which means a lot of support for when you need it! Alongside my dissertation I am also a Data Buddy which is again a great way to gain some experience and earn a bit of money while you do it! I am hoping to continue my education by completing the new Q-Step Masters next year.

Gary Haylett – Q-Step Data Buddy

I am Gary Haylett in my 3rd year studying Mathematics at MMU. I work for Q-Step being a data buddy where people come for numerical help. It has been a marvellous opportunity to learn new skills such as teamwork and has built my confidence in dealing with diverse members of society who come along for help. It has been an excellent addition towards my personal development aiding in my aspiration in becoming a mathematics teacher in my future career. I would definitely recommend people to join the Q-Step family and progress with their careers.

Student Research

At Manchester Met Q-Step we feel it is important that our students are involved in research practice from the very outset of their journey. Students are regularly involved in real-world projects that give them the opportunity to enhance valuable skills in applied research while also engaging with the larger community. Student partnered research projects are testament the ambitions of Q-Step and we are confident that by empowering students they are more able to relate to research theory by putting it into practice.
