Research summary

Set up by Dr Jason Roche in 2016, the network brings together academics and students with an interest in the Crusades.

Members include leading specialists from Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Lancaster University and the universities of Huddersfield, Hull, Leicester, Leeds, Liverpool and York.

The network aims to position northern England at the forefront of research and postgraduate study on the Crusades and related fields of enquiry.

Scholars and students do not need to be based in northern England to join.

Each year the network organises an annual symposium and monthly events to explore new developments in Crusades study.

Members also take part in the Leeds International Medieval Congress, Europe’s largest annual gathering of humanities scholars, as well as contributing to other international events.

A collaboration with Manchester Met’s War, Conflict and Society research group led to the publication of a special issue of the International Journal of Military History and Historiography. Entitled The Modern Appropriation of the Crusades, the special issue was inspired by the proceedings of the Network’s second annual symposium.
