SciBar March – Plastic fantastic: Can we replace complex natural antibodies with a simple polymer?

The Lass O’Gowrie

In recent years, there is growing interest in producing ‘man-made’ mimics of antibodies, or simply speaking ‘plastic’ antibodies. These polymeric receptors are stable under extremes of pH and temperature and can be produced in bulk quantities, going up to kilograms per batch, which make them a low-cost alternative. Commercial applications for sensing of biomolecules with these plastic antibodies is emerging, but current use is limited due to the lack of simple and low-cost read-out methods.
