SciBar: October

Lass O'Gowrie

The second SciBar of the 2017/18 series is with Dr. Roger Hunt.

October's topic is: Using the Force: Histopathology - Pointless or QI?

If you say you’re a pathologist, people think your job is just all about dealing with dead bodies and autopsies. It isn’t, we save lives too. In this talk I will explain about my work as a consultant histopathologist in a large NHS path lab, where our team diagnoses over 1000 new breast cancers a year. You will find out that breast cancer has many forms and what our team’s role is in its diagnosis.  I’ll explain how the information we provide helps determine and drive personalised treatment for everyone with breast cancer and how it has helped the survival rate double over the last 40 years.  I’ll also throw in a quiz, with prizes, and … if there’s time … mention the odd autopsy. Don’t worry, although it will be nearly Halloween, I’ll make sure it’s not too gory or scary!

This event will take place on Monday 30th October from 5:30pm onwards. The talk will last around 45 mins, with a quick break before a question and answer session and the chance for further discussion while enjoying a few drinks in the cosy settings of the Lass O’Gowrie pub. No scientific background needed, just turn up and join in!
