About our research

We have a successful history of researching human health and the limits of elite sports performance.

Recently, the Research Excellence Framework rated 95% of our sport-related research and over 80% of our health research as world-leading.

Our research aims to:

  • offer lifelong health solutions
  • extend the period of good health for everyone in society
  • push the boundaries of human sports performance

To deliver high-quality research, we use state-of-the-art facilities and resources, such as:

  • the 3T MRI scanner
  • human performance laboratories
  • stem cell and tissue culture suites
  • tools for genomics and proteomics
  • an extensive microscopy imaging suite
  • a specialist professional services team with technical expertise
  • our world-class Insitute of Sport building
  • the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s brand-new Dalton building
I'm excited that we're harnessing our research strengths to provide new knowledge that will help all members of society to live independently and in good health for longer.
