About our research

The study of microbial populations is essential to our understanding of many of the fundamental processes of life, including the evolution and epidemiology of infectious disease.

We are involved in genomic and metagenomic research aimed at examining factors promoting the global, national and local spread of major antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens in humans and other organisms.

We are also leading research efforts into developing novel and specific treatments for human and crop diseases. We are targeting bacterial viruses based on knowledge of the population structure of particular bacterial pathogens.

Our recent investments in next-generation DNA sequencing technologies for genomic and metagenomic analyses include Illumina NextSeq and MiSeq platforms.

We have benefitted from recent, substantial Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council funding, internal Manchester Met funding and small industrial awards.
