Department of Sociology

Muzamil Shazad

Community Engagement Volunteer at Greater Manchester Police

"I undertook a Placement at Back on Track. The opportunity was priceless as it allowed me to match what I learnt in theory to be seen in practice."
Why did you pick your chosen degree?

This MA follows on from my undergraduate degree in Criminology and Sociology. It allowed me to specialise in criminology, which is ideal for the career path I wanted to go down (Police). Criminology is also a broad degree, which is why I chose it. You can take a law conversion course or complete volunteer opportunities in legal firms if you want to change your career path. I would definitely recommend completing some volunteer/work shadowing/placement within the sector you want to go into. This allows you to see the work first-hand and see if it is the right choice for you.

What skills do you feel you have gained/developed at Manchester Metropolitan University that helped you prepare for life after University?

I developed my verbal and written communication at Manchester Met. This helped me display information in various manners while on placement within the Civil Service. Completing a placement developed my time management skills – it ensured I adhered to a schedule and prepared me for a fast-paced work environment. Learning about different theories and concepts developed my analytical thinking skills; in particular my Dissertation taught me perseverance, persistence and dedication.

Which topic(s) of study did you enjoy the most, and why?

I particularly enjoyed my Dissertation, it gave me the freedom to research a topic of my choice, conduct research and gain in-depth knowledge on the topic.

Were you involved in research projects with our staff or did you undertake a placement while on your course?

I undertook a placement at Back on Track, an adult education centre for adults with multiple needs such as mental health, substance misuse, homelessness, criminal record etc. The opportunity was priceless - it allowed me to match what I learnt in theory to be seen in practice. Furthermore, completing a report project here meant I could add the placement on my CV; this gave me the experience to access jobs in research. I definitely recommend taking the placement unit. You gain experience, have a balance of experience and work, and meet some wonderful people.

Since graduating have you taken any additional qualifications, training or continuing professional development to develop your career?

I completed a placement within the Civil Service. Further to this, I am volunteering within GMP and plan to work there in future.

Why should a student choose Manchester Metropolitan University?

The support received is second to none. The tutors are great and are experts in their fields. I would not hesitate in recommending this University.

What is your top tip for students about finding a graduate job, or on how to progress their career?

Do not dismiss people’s tips and advice; they have been where you are and only want the best for you. Get your CV checked, practice interview skills, go on websites like Debut which talent-spot graduates. In the meantime, gain as much experience as you can.
