We are committed to promoting a safe, supportive and inclusive campus environment for every member of our community. If you experience an incident of sexual harassment, violence, discrimination or bullying, you can submit a report on Report and Support.  You can choose to report anonymously or provide your details and a trained advisor will contact you to talk through your options and arrange further support. You can report something that has happened to you, or if you’re concerned about a friend.

Greater Manchester Police Drop In

Greater Manchester Police has a team dedicated to supporting students at our local universities. They are now providing a weekly drop in at the Business School Student Hub every Thursday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm (during term-time only). You are welcome to call in to talk with a GMP officer about any crime concerns, either for yourself or others in the community, or you can talk about crime prevention activities.

Safely exploring the city

Ensure you take care to maintain your own personal safety when you are out and about. Here are some tips to consider:

  • When going out at night, try and stay with other people and plan your journey home. Book a taxi in advance if possible, or check the times of the night buses.
  • Don’t walk the streets alone at night or in the early hours of the morning. If you do have to walk, don’t take shortcuts and stick to the main roads.
  • Keep your phone out of sight while walking along streets, roads and between sites.
  • Be careful using cashpoints – try and withdraw money from machines located in branches or get cashback in shops. Don’t use a cash machine alone at night.
  • Do not confront attackers or intruders. Shout for help or use a personal alarm. These can be purchased from the Students’ Union shop.
  • Make sure you stay safe around water, particularly if you have been drinking. Read about the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Don’t Drink and Drown Campaign

Safety at home

Stay safe at home by following these top safety tips:

  • Lock your room whenever you leave it (even if you’re just going to the kitchen). Always close your window and lock your door if you’re going out. Let your flatmates know when you’re going to be out, especially if overnight.
  • Decrease the chances of a fire or electrical safety issue by ensuring all electrical items are safe and in excellent working order.
  • Familiarise yourself with any fire procedures for your accommodation, including the evacuation procedure and meeting points.
  • Ensure that all doors are kept closed, including any interconnecting doors. All corridors should to be kept clear for fire escape routes and any items found here will be removed.
  • Do not wedge doors open or tamper with door retaining springs. Doors prevent smoke and fire spreading.
