PCs and Macs: locations and availability

There are Windows and Mac computers in locations across campus. For up-to-date PC and Mac availability, see:

Specialist software on campus

Some software is only available in certain locations. To see what software is installed where, see these software locations spreadsheets (you’ll need to log in with your university account):

Using these spreadsheets:

  • Buildings and rooms are listed in the green rows along the top, and applications are listed in the blue column on the left.
  • A tick means that the software is available on computers in that room.
  • On the Windows spreadsheet, you can use the tabs along the bottom to see a breakdown of buildings by faculty, or see all locations on the first tab.

Computer shutdown and power saving policies

We shut down unattended computers to save energy. The sections below show how long a computer can be inactive before being shut down automatically.

Some computers are also scheduled to shut down at a certain time - for example, when the building closes.

When a computer shuts down, any files saved to the desktop are deleted. For this reason, never save files to the desktop.

We recommend saving to OneDrive, and saving regularly. For more information on file storage, see: File Storage.
