Email security

Every day, around 20,000 harmful spam emails are blocked by our servers.

As a University, we have a collective responsibility to keep our inboxes safe and protect Manchester Met from harmful attacks.

We have partnered with cloud-based email security system, Mimecast, to increase our protection against spam and viruses.

The Mimecast Personal Portal

Every student at Manchester Met can access the Mimecast Personal Portal.

You can use the Mimecast Personal Portal to:

  • Report spam to the Mimecast Security Team
  • Manage your allow and block lists
  • Manage personal and moderated emails that have been put on hold

Mimecast’s other security features

We have partnered with Mimecast to:

  • Provide a higher rate of spam detection by blocking email impersonation attacks and sophisticated phishing attacks
  • Provide spam awareness training
  • Provide students with more control in defining what emails are released to inbox
  • Provide students with a mechanism to report phishing and spam email
Mimecast daily emails

You will receive a daily email from Mimecast that lists all the emails Mimecast has put ‘on hold’ for security reasons. These emails will arrive at 9am Monday – Friday. You can choose to ‘release’ these emails to your inbox and deal with them as normal, delete them, or report them as spam if you don’t recognise the sender.

Web links and attachments

All web links embedded in emails and attachments will now be screened for malicious content. This means that you can feel confident sending and receiving emails, safe in the knowledge all links and attachments are free from spam or viruses.

Emails from outside the University

All emails from outside the University that arrive in your inbox will include this caution message: “This email originated from outside of Manchester Met. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognise the sender and believe the content to be safe. Please contact the IT Helpline if you have any concerns.”
