Elias is a Reader in Earth Observation and Geographical Information Systems. Over the last two decades, he has been working in the field of land degradation monitoring with satellite data, especially in dryland environments. His work provides valuable information to decision and policymakers that is necessary for mitigating the effects of climate change and for building a more sustainable future.

Ellias also supports the Environmental Strategy Group as a co-opted member, helping advise the University Executive Group on the strategic direction for the new 2030 University sustainability strategy, and its implementation encompassing education and Education for Sustainable Development, research, internationalisation, professional services and campus and working practices, aligned to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
