Intro

We’ve built sustainability into everything we do – into our business operations, employment practices and into the very fabric of our buildings. By far our biggest opportunity for making a difference, however, is through you, our students.

You can take action or learn about the issues – by getting involved in our campaigns, initiatives and training, volunteering, or even taking on relevant paid roles. From the day you join us to the day you graduate, you’ll find that sustainability is big part of life at Manchester Met.

Your Sustainable Journey

  • Induction and welcome

In your first days as a student, there’s a lot to take in. But with our welcome events, student life fairs, faculty events and inductions, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn about life at Manchester Met, including sustainability.

Sustainability is embedded into your academic induction and forms an integral part of the ways we do things.

We encourage all students to examine our sustainability strategies and policies during induction. If you have any questions, ask at one of our student hubs or contact us

OurSustainability Engagement Strategic Action Plan sets out our ambitions and the actions we’re taking to embed sustainable development across the University. Check out our Learning for a Sustainable Future to find out more.

There are so many ways of introducing sustainability and making it part of your university experience. Here are some examples of the activities and resources across the University:

    • Student living induction. Before our students move into their accommodation, they complete an interactive presentation and quiz on sustainability, and other key areas they’ll need to know about.
    • Communicating the message before arrival. The University’s Recruitment and Admissions team work in partnership with the Sustainability department to ensure that sustainability is an important aspect of students’ university preparations and awareness.
    • Sustainability video. We created a video to sum-up our commitment to sustainability and recent achievements, which was made available to all students during welcome and induction as part of our communications.
    • Student academic induction resources. Sustainability information was provided to all academic staff at the University to include in their student academic inductions - this included our video, and a set of slides and information that were woven straight into inductions.
    • Welcome event. The University undertook a vast range of online welcome and induction events for students - one of which was our Student Life Essentials fairs. All students were invited to attend online sessions to learn more about university life and were also provided with short videos to find out more about Manchester Met. All our our key departments and services contributed towards the events, and were available to answer questions from students, including our sustainability student ambassadors and Sustainability department.
  • Placements and projects

Make sustainability part of your learning experience. undertake a project as part of your course, your thesis, or with the University’s Sustainability team. There are all sorts of opportunities for making sustainability a part of your studies.

    • We’re part of the NUS For Good programme, which partners students and graduates with forward thinking organisations to collaborate on research, placements and projects to progress economic, social and environmental sustainability.
    • Work on a sustainable development project working with the University’s estates and sustainability departments, speak to your tutor or contact our Sustainability Team.
    • Check out our Learning for Sustainability page for examples of previous projects and how you can get involved.
  • Reuse and recycling

Whether studying on campus, or in your student accommodation, you’re responsible for your waste and recycling.

If you live in Manchester Met Student Living (Archway, Cambridge, Cavendish, Dale, Dunham House, Naylor, Vine House):

    • Recycling your waste is easy – check out the recycling posters and information your local handbook. You can recycle paper and card, cans, plastics, glass and food.
    • We provide free clear plastic bin liners (from your local reception).

If you’re in private accommodation, just check with your local team for information about recycling. If you’re in a house or flat in or around Manchester, you can find out more at Recycle for Greater Manchester.

  • Give it, don't bin it

Our recycling and donation campaign kicks in at the end of term. When you’re packing up, make sure you donate your unwanted clothes, books, kitchen equipment and even food.

Working with our Manchester partners, Give it, don’t bin it raised an estimated £2.5m for the British Heart Foundation, and in two years given the equivalent of 2,200 meals to local people, through the Manchester Food Bank.

You are key in making this campaign a  success - find out more here.

  • Student travel

Greater Manchester has great public transport links, making getting to campus and around the city convenient, accessible and safe.

There are a range of travel options for you to choose from - from walking and cycling to public transport - and discounts for students too.

  • Sustainability Ambassador Scheme

If you have a passion for sustainability, climate change and social justice, you can gain new skills and experiences – not to mention earning money during your studies – as a sustainability ambassador. It’s a role that puts you alongside other passionate students, helping deliver a range of campaigns and initiatives across the year.

Recruitment takes place from Welcome Week in September each year – you can now express your interest. Project-based roles will also be recruited throughout the year and can be found on Jobs4Students.

We created several paid positions for our students to create social media content which was posted through the University’s social channels to create awareness of sustainability campaigns and topics. We did this for Plastic-free July, and for Earth Day where our ambassadors filmed and produced video content, and planned and delivered their own awareness stalls on-campusas part of Go Green Fortnight.

  • Funded Student-Led Projects

You can now apply for funding up to £250 to undertake activities that deliver and support our joint vision to be a leading sustainable university that contributes to the agenda for sustainable development.

We can’t wait to see your ideas. Find out more information and apply for our Sustainability Fund.

  • Responsible Futures Auditors

We create paid opportunities for students as auditors and focus group members to help develop our education for sustainable development framework as part of the Responsible Futures accreditation.

Teaming up with SOS UK, we create training and knowledge share opportunities.

Key areas of sustainability are audited by students who are paid as part of working groups and evidence is gathered to present sustainable development across the Univeristy. These audits are then used as evidence to create smart action plans that help inform our strategies, statements and policies.

  • Sustainability Internship

We support intern positions annually to assist with the development of our sustainable engagement plan, which includes paid project work.

How can I get involved?

  • Climate Action Week

Climate Action Week (formerly Go Green Fortnight / Climate and Social Action Week) is a week of action led by students and staff at Manchester Met.

We are planning the delivery of a climate action week for the 2023/24 academic year and whilst keeping the dates flexible, we hope we can go ahead with a good mix of on-campus and virtual activities.

Please email the Sustainability Team if you’re interested in supporting this project. Or if you’re interested in co-creating our programme or delivering your own activity, staff and students can apply for up to £250 to deliver events and workshops through our sustainability fund. Check out our mailing list to keep up to date with progress.

This year we supported two student-oriented sustainability action weeks/festivals:

  • Fairtrade Fortnight

We created paid opportunities for our student ambassadors to deliver Fairtrade stalls and activities which contributed to student and staff awareness of ethical and fair trade issues - such as fair pay and working conditions. This year we offered students a chance to attend multiple events where they could learn about Fairtrade and feedback on how we could incorporate Fairtrade products at Man Met.

  • British Heart Foundation pop-up shops

  • Sustainability at The Union

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of The Union – from how they run their building to what they sell in their commercial outlets. Carefully considering the natural and social environment with every decision made.

The Union and University have been a Responsible Futures accredited partnership since 2015, reflecting our commitment to embedding environmental sustainability and social responsibility in both the formal and informal curriculum. Through our continued collaboration with The Union, we aim to stay at the forefront of the sector in this area. Find out more about The Union’s sustainable commitments.
