The Northern Quota is a news website run by staff and students from our Multimedia Journalism courses.

The site has been designed specifically to showcase the talents of students across all undergraduate and postgraduate units. We include sports reports, reviews, features, breaking news and of course large events of national and international importance, such as our live coverage of local and national elections. Most notably this included the mayoral election for Greater Manchester, where tutors and students were located at various counts within Greater Manchester to relay results live throughout the night and blog directly onto the Northern Quota news site.

Northern Quota intern editor Miles Casey said: “Covering the mayoral election proved to be a fantastic opportunity to put into practice a variety of practical skills learned over the course. The coverage centred around curating content from field reporters and translating it into online content, combined with sourcing and developing stories from social media. Facebook and Twitter allowed us to share our posts to a new audience, boosting the traffic on the actual website. Directing field reports on what type of content the website needed proved challenging due to the hectic nature of the count, but paid off handsomely as we were able to live stream the announcement of Andy Burnham’s victory and his victory speech.”

The news site is used as both an educational tool in teaching journalism in class, as well as giving journalism students an outlet for their work, whether news stories, audio-video, data journalism or extra-curricular projects. thenorthernquota.org
