What is your current role and what are your main responsibilities?

My current role is as a Broadcast Journalist at the BBC Somali Service. My main responsibility is to report, present, research, write, translate, edit and adapt stories or programme material for BBC Somali TV, radio and online audiences.

What did you enjoy most about your degree and why?

I enjoyed the practical elements of the course, in particular the Broadcast Skills module. I enjoyed creating the practical artefacts especially the radio package and the TV programme.  The course didn’t only provide me the essential skills required to be journalist, but it also gave me a feel for what it was like to work in the industry.  The whole programme, with its industry specific training allowed me develop the knowledge and skills I needed to work as a multimedia journalist.

What key skills/achievements did your degree help you gain?

The skills to cover any story for print, web, TV or radio.

Did you do a placement?

I did my placement at the BBC World Service. The placement was important because it provided an opportunity to supplement the training with industry based practical experience and networking opportunities. 

What is your top tip for other students looking to study your degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

Be hands on and gain as much practical skills as you can.
