What do you like most about your course?

Multimedia Journalism is a very flexible and creative course which allows you to put your own ideas into your assessments. The assessments are also uniquely challenging and offer a first-hand experience of journalism in the real world as you approach and interview people. Aside from just writing, Multimedia Journalism incorporates a variety of different mediums, such as audio, video and editing. This means you get to practice on professional equipment that is provided by the university and use Adobe editing softwares, which are used in the industry, supplying you with a vast amount of skills expected in this career path. I have mostly enjoyed the variety of topics that this one course covers, from learning how to write for a newspaper, to how to video, edit and upload an interview all from the confines of a mobile.

What skills do you feel you have gained/developed during your studies at Man Met?

Throughout my studies at Manchester Met I have gained a variety of skills. My writing skills have excelled at university from writing for a newspaper and magazine. I have learnt how to extensively use the settings of a DSLR camera to achieve the best image and how to frame and capture the best audio during a video. I have learnt how to navigate complex Adobe softwares such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro and InDesign, all programmes which are used by professionals in the industry. But most importantly, my confidence has undoubtedly grown. I have managed to contact crucial interviewees for my work and have prepared and interviewed them completely on my own. This course embeds an independence through the assessment work, as well as team work skills, which I feel are necessary for a successful career.

Have you taken part in any extracurricular activities or projects alongside your studies?

Alongside my studies I created The Multimedia Journalism Society with my friend who is also a journalism student. Creating the society meant we could reach more people than those whom we shared lectures and seminars with. We hosted a launch party and we had people from a variety of years attending. It has enriched my time at university because it made me feel a part of Man Met and created a sense of unity.
